The Werewolf Meets His Match (Nocturne Falls #2) by Kristen Painter Review

Hey readers! Ethan back with you today with the first of several reviews I'll be posting. Last night I shared my 5-star thoughts on the first read in this incredible series and today I'll be following it up with my thoughts on books two and three. I know lots of my bookish friends are going to love this series! On the chopping block this time? The Werewolf Meets His Match, book two in the Nocturne Falls series by Kristen Painter! Before we get to my thoughts, here's a but about the novel and our author:

Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town where Halloween is celebrated 365 days a year. The tourists think it's all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better. Living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs and all.

Getting arrested wasn’t on werewolf Ivy Kincaid’s agenda when she arrived in Nocturne Falls, but her life rarely goes according to plan. The upside of spending the night in the local lock-up is finding a hotel room is no longer a worry...but the downside is the man she’s come to marry will get his first impression of her behind bars. Not exactly the way Ivy was hoping to meet her pack's sworn enemy...aka her fiancĂ©.

Sheriff (and werewolf) Hank Merrow is the alpha's heir. Everything he's ever done, from becoming an Army Ranger to serving in law enforcement, has been in preparation for the day he’ll take over. Getting married to cement a shaky truce is no different. Hank will do his duty, even if it means shackling himself to a woman he has no intention of liking, let alone loving.

But Ivy is nothing like Hank expected. As feisty as she is beautiful, she's as determined as he is to make a go of marriage for the sake of peace between their packs. The trouble is, Ivy has secrets that could destroy everything Hank holds dear...including his newfound love for her.

My Thoughts:

Here we are back again on our second outing to Painter's fictional Nocturne Falls, Georgia. And yes folks, it most definitely is fictional, unfortunately, numerous Google searches have confirmed that I cannot, in fact, purchase a bus ticket and move there myself. I know this deeply saddens us all. Oh well. That being said, I am so excited to say that this series continues to blow me away. Painter has really done it again with this second installment of the series!

As anyone who follows this Guy's reviews well knows, were-creatures are often my least favorite of the paranormal variety. I'm honestly not sure why, but I have a pretty good idea that the wonderful folks in the media have probably all but ruined them for me. Thankfully a few amazing authors have really helped to turn me around to see the light when it comes to shifters in literature. They actually can be amazing!

Match follows the story of Hank Merrow (Nocturne Falls sheriff and side character from book one) after he is slated for an arranged marriage to a neighboring (and rival) alpha's daughter. Straight laced and by-the-books Hank can't imagine his life being wed to a woman who is no doubt as brash, rude, and crude as the rest of the Kincaid clan, or is she? Ivy Kincaid wants nothing more than to get out from under her father's thumb. Following a life of abuse, Ivy's tried multiple times to free herself from the clan, but after a life altering change, Ivy now has the needs of someone else to consider. Could this arranged marriage really bring her the independence and security she desires?

I found the plot to this novel to be absolutely incredible. One of my favorite parts about book one was that it was a fun, quick, read. While I can definitely say the same about book two, I will add that book two is much darker and has a much deeper storyline than its' predecessor that I greatly appreciated. It still held the same weight in terms of story, but this one really hit home with a few more feels and some hard hitting themes. Painter has crafted another spooktacular masterpiece from Nocturne Falls!

Ivy and Hank's characters were written to perfection, but this novel really hit home with it's supporting cast. Birdie, Charlie, Bridget, and Sam in particular really struck me with excellent character development and side plots. Painter really did an incredible job rounding out each character and supporting the main overall agenda in such a short story.

Like book one, Kristen does an excellent job with the romance in this story. I will warn readers that this series has a bit of 'instalove' or rapidly developed romance, but with reason, each story is on a bit of a timer in some of the most unique ways. While the relationships may be rushed, I found them to all be genuine and realistic. Also like book one, Painter chose to keep all of her sex scenes off-page keeping this at a PG-13 level that I greatly enjoyed.

I said it before and I'll say it again, anyone who is looking to add a new, fun series to their TBR this season, I highly recommend Kristen Painter's Nocturne Falls. Especially with Halloween right around the corner, this series is sure to be a smash hit with all fans of paranormal amazingness!

With excellent writing, great character development, and an original idea to boot, Kristen Painter continues to excel with The Werewolf Meets His Match. A fang-tastic read from cover to cover! It should come as absolutely no surprise that I am granting this one a well-deserved 5-star review! Be sure to add this one to your TBR, you will not regret it!

The Vampire's Mail Order Bride (Nocturne Falls #1) by Kristen Painter Review

Hey readers! Ethan here with a review for you on this wonderful Wednesday evening. I came across this series thanks to a dear friend of mine and I am so excited this one crossed my path. This time on the chopping block? The Vampire's Mail Order Bride, the first novel in the Nocturne Falls series by Kristen Painter. Here's a bit about the novel and our author before we get to my thoughts:

Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town where Halloween is celebrated 365 days a year. The tourists think it's all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better. Living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs and all.

After seeing her maybe-mobster boss murder a guy, Delaney James assumes a new identity and pretends to be a mail order bride. What she doesn't know is her groom to be is a 400-year-old vampire.

Hugh Ellingham has only agreed to the set up to make his overbearing grandmother happy. His past means love is no longer an option. Except he never counted on Delaney and falling in love for real.

Too bad both of them are keeping some mighty big secrets...

My Thoughts:

Here lately, I've been bogged down by so many deep, dark reads that pulled my mentality in every way possible. So much so that I forgot the most important part about reading: it's supposed to be fun! Sometimes the greatest reads are the ones you can just devour and allow yourself to be transported away from reality, if even for a brief period. Reads you can whip through and say 'wow that was a fun read!'. I can't say I have done that in some time. Then I was introduced to the amazing Kristen Painter!

The Vampire's Mail Order Bride follow the stories of Hugh Ellingham and Delaney James and the fun-tastic relationship obstacles that ensue. It's a quick read that you will not be able to set down. From the very first page, Painter does an incredible job at setting the tone and pace for this read. Thrust from her fast-paced Brooklyn life after a surprise run-in with mobsters, Delaney must steal and identity and flee her home to save herself from harm, she never imagined she'd find home in the arms of a vampire avoiding love.

Bride is the first in a series of fun paranormal romance tales in Painter's Nocturne Falls series. I can already tell that this series is going to become a favorite of mine. Why? Let me try to explain this series for you readers. It's like Disney's Halloween Town mixed to perfection with Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mystery Novels series. A thrilling mix of paranormal and suspense with all kinds of fun thrown in! The city of Nocturne Falls is an incredible place that I loved reading about. Vamps, weres, fae, gargoyles, witches, dragon-shifters, and so many more all living together in paranormal harmony within one city? Yeah, that's some fun I can definitely get behind! I think the greatest part about this series is that Painter's options are virtually limitless, she can go anywhere with this series!

The characters in Bride were some of the best I've seen in a novel of this type. Each were written with amazing traits that identified each as unique and noteworthy. From our head vampire Hugh, to his entire Ellingham clan, including his Rook, Stanhill, to our resident human Delaney, Painter's way with words ensures each character is well-developed and memorable! As the first novel in the series, these is a huge cast of characters that I'm sure I'll touch base on as each installment progresses, but for a first novel, I was thoroughly blown away by Bride.

I'd also like to make a note on the romance aspect of this series. Romance stories and I aren't always the best of friends, but I absolutely love how Painter handled the romance in this series. Sure there is love, flirting, romance, and some adult language, but Painter does all of her 'sexual content' off page, a move that is greatly appreciated by myself (and I'm sure other non-romance readers as well). The fact that Painter was able to tell such an amazing story without resorting to hardcore sex or erotica speaks volumes of her talent and writing style.

Much like the story itself, I'll keep this review short and sweet. The Vampire's Mail Order Bride is an absolutely incredible debut novel for Kristen Painter's Nocturne Falls series. I cannot rave enough about this series. It's just plain fun! From the first page to the back cover, you won't be able to set this incredible novel down! Major kudos to Painter for crafting such a unique series sure to please readers across genres!

That being said, it should come as no surprise that I am granting The Vampire's Mail Order Bride by Kristen Painter a well-earned 5-star review! I cannot wait to see what else Painter has in store for the residents of Nocturne Falls! I highly recommend this read to all fans of paranormal, romance, or fantasy reads.

In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I've already devoured books two and three in less than 48 hours... I may or may not have an addiction. You will to after reading these! Fiction! Fantasy verses Paranormal.

Hello everyone. I’m new to this whole blogging thing, so I not really sure how this should start, but the question has been asked and I feel it needs to be answered: Which do you like writing more, paranormal or fantasy?

I wanted to start out with something witty about fiction writing being anything you wanted it to be, but I think that goes without saying, so I’m just going to jump straight into it. Because, when this question was asked, I didn’t know how to answer it.

As a writer, I’ve delved into the realm of fantasy without as much as a life line back to reality, but I hadn’t sat down and made a conscious choice on what form that fiction would take. I build the worlds to fit the story without worrying where it fell in the realms of paranormal and fantasy. It took tearing my two series apart to see the differences. This is what I found.

Vampires and werewolves have been around since the dawn of time… or so that’s how it seems. They are well established in their rolls. Anyone that doesn’t live under a rock knows that vampires suck blood and werewolves get hairy once a month. So when I started writing Kindling Flames, I had already established canon to use as fodder. Even most of the fay had stories that could be used to base characters on. So, while there was a fair amount of world building needed, it was more research and taking what was already there and changing it to fit my vision. But, if you changed it too far, you had better be ready to defend yourself.

I had a lot more freedom when writing the Dragons of Eternity Series. Dragons are one of the classic fantasy creatures, but there’s less predetermined information available. While there are dragon shaped holes, you can stuff just about anything in them and be accepted. No defending necessary. This is how it is, accept it or put the book down.

With going into world building, writing fantasy took more effort because there weren’t set rules to follow. If I wanted magic, I could drop it in without explain where it came from or how it works. Bam! It’s there because I said so. Don’t like it, too bad, because that is how it is. But on the other hand, while the paranormal world was based on the real world and mostly established, anything that stepped outside the lines of excepted reality had to be explained. There had to be a reason it was there, and if that reason isn’t plausible, you had better be ready to catch flax from it.

But that still leaves the question, which do I like writing more, paranormal or fantasy? Well, for me, that question isn’t answerable. An answer would mean that I liked one more that the other and I can’t commit to that. I enjoy both forms of fiction and I write in whatever form fits the story best. And for my next trick, vampire dragons!

Escape from Witchwood Hollow by Jordan Elizabeth Review

Hey readers! Happy Sunday! Ethan here with another review for you guys. I caught this novel from a review request last month and I randomly selected it as my most recent read. I'm a little backlogged on reviews right now, but I couldn't wait another moment to share my thoughts on this one with you all! This time on the chopping block? Escape from Witchwood Hollow by Jordan Elizabeth. Before we get to my thoughts, here's a bit about the novel and our author:

Everyone in Arnn - a small farming town with more legends than residents - knows the story of Witchwood Hollow: if you venture into the whispering forest, the witch will trap your soul among the shadowed trees.

After losing her parents in a horrific terrorist attack on the Twin Towers, fifteen-year-old Honoria and her older brother escape New York City to Arnn. In the lure of that perpetual darkness, Honoria finds hope, when she should be afraid.

Perhaps the witch can reunite her with her lost parents. Awakening the witch, however, brings more than salvation from mourning, for Honoria discovers a past of missing children and broken promises.

To save the citizens of Arnn from becoming the witch’s next victims, she must find the truth behind the woman’s madness.

How deep into Witchwood Hollow does Honoria dare venture?

Jordan Elizabeth
Jordan Elizabeth, formally Jordan Elizabeth Mierek, writes down her nightmares in order to live her dreams. With an eclectic job history behind her, she is now diving into the world of author. It happens to be her most favorite one yet. When she’s not creating art or searching for lost history in the woods, she’s updating her blog. Jordan is the president of the Utica Writers Club. She roams Central New York, but she loves to travel.

*****
My Thoughts:

In the world of young adult literature, paranormal reigns supreme. I will never run out of paranormal options with the way the industry is cranking out novels in this genre, but in many cases, they're really lacking something. It's getting to the point where I need another genre to tie it to, something to make each read unique. One of my absolute favorites is YA-horror. It's often overlooked as it's probably the smallest of the YA sub-genres. Not many authors can pull it off successfully. There's such a stigma around writing anything in the horror genre that most authors stray away from it altogether. Thankfully for me, Jordan Elizabeth is not one of those authors.

Escape from Witchwood Hollow is neither marketed nor categorized as a horror novel, but I'm here to tell you that it was among the most terrifying YA-horror novels I have ever devoured. What a trip! The entire novel had a very Shyamalan-ian feel to it that really kept me reeling from the first chapter to the final sentence. This is not a read for the faint of heart, Elizabeth really pulls out all the stops to make this novel jaw-dropping. When I say horror, I don't mean blood and gore either, Elizabeth does a phenomenal job at keeping the horror aspect of this novel on the mental plane (for the most part). It will leave your brain on a track it won't be able to get off. Seriously mind-blowing at times, with a twist I really didn't see coming!

The plot of Escape was one of the more unique that I have seen in a YA novel. I am a huge stickler for historical novels so I absolutely fell in love with Elizabeth's decision to follow three characters throughout various time periods (1600s, 1800s, and 2001). That was a great literary device. Tying the story into current events (the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001) was a great idea that really grounded the story with an emotional anchor. Truly creative thinking on the part of Elizabeth. The historical aspects of the novel was spot on for American history and really helped to set the tone for the various chapters of the novel. The eventual ways in while the various storylines tie together really was groundbreaking for me. The execution was so seamless, only an author with the storytelling ability of Elizabeth could successfully pull it off.

This was a really quick read (just shy of 200 pages) so I really think the one thing Elizabeth missed out on was character development. While we learn a lot about the characters, we really don't dive too far into their minds and psyche in this story. It worked well for the story, but I would have liked to see the story expanded to allow for more character development. In the end, it really doesn't matter because Elizabeth is able to formulate a successful ending while wrapping up every loose end at once. There are far too many characters involved in this novel to critique them all, but for the most part I liked every one. There was one character I really didn't like and don't really understand the purpose of, but in the end it didn't bother me enough to change my thoughts on the story.

The settings in Escape were great. Arnn is written to perfection. I've never lived the city life so I'm very familiar with small-towns like Arnn. In fact, my hometown even has local legends like Arnn as well! The city of Arnn is so creatively reflected throughout the various timelines that I was very impressed. The physicality and timeless features of the city and the pertinent locations featured in the story were really a nice touch.

In true horror fashion, Elizabeth touches on some hard hitting themes to tell her story. Glimpses into the topics of death, guilt, survival, love, abandonment, family, and redemption are all present in this story that will really appeal to readers cross-genre. If this novel doesn't leave you reflecting on your own mortality, you've read it wrong. Major kudos to Elizabeth for touching on such hard-hitting topics without weighing down her story.

In the end, I was beyond impressed with Escape. I could hardly put it down. I can say without hesitation that this is one of the best YA paranormal-horror novels that I have ever read. I am so excited be grant Escape from Witchwood Hollow a well-earned 5-star review. This is an excellent read for the autumn season (particularly around Halloween) that is sure to be a hit with fans of YA, horror, paranormal, and historic fiction. I highly recommend this read to anyone looking to add something a little different to their TBR lists this season!
*****

Alright readers, that's all I have for you on the topic of Escape from Witchwood Hollow. As you can see, this was definitely a read I thoroughly enjoyed. I will be keeping a close eye on Elizabeth and her future releases. Be sure to add this one to your TBR! Thanks for stopping by. Until next time, Happy Reading.

Note from Nazarea Andrews:

I think it’s no secret that one of my favorite things is zombies. I love them, and going back to my little zombie infested apocalypse was so much fun. I knew almost from the first book that at the end I wanted to release a box set. And I wanted to tell stories that I didn’t get to in the novels. Finn said—repeatedly—that only one thing mattered. Keeping Ren safe. For him, that was the goal, that was the entire story. And that’s the story I told—Finn and Ren’s and when they found their happily ever after (or for now, considering the world), that’s where it ended. But that left a lot of really wide open stories, right? And this was my chance to share some of those stories. Here’s a little taste of what you’ll get in the box set.

Dinner in the Haven—set before The World Without a Future, join Ren, Finn and Collin for a typical evening. Get to see a snapshot of life before the zombies brought down the walls and everything between Finn and Ren changed. The Road Less Traveled—We know what happened to Finn and Ren when they left to find medicine. But what caused Collin and Dustin to leave the safety of the Hole, and how did they end up traveling with a priest? Find out what Collin was doing and why.

The Girl Who Fought The East—Of all the things from Finn’s past, Kelsey Buchman might be the most enigmatic. For the first time, go back to the War of the East and see Finn, when he still had his best friend, and that rarest of things—hope.

Reclaiming The West—There were three stories that didn’t get tied neatly into a bow when I end The Ruin of The World. And this tells a little bit more—what happened in the Holdout, and what happened to Holly, Lori, Sylvia and Omar.

Sneak Peek at The Blood Scion—my next series is so much fun. I adored Ren and Finn, but getting to know the world and characters in this one—it’s been a blast! Get a glimpse of the lore behind the Scion, and read the first three chapters of The Blood Scion.
