Especially the queen of panther shifters. But Dare, leader of the Nox, faces the most difficult decisions of her life as she struggles to keep her freedom and keep the Nox safe.

Destined to marry when she turns twenty-two and give up the magic that is her birthright, Dare fights back, determined to change the course of history. Only along the way she falls for a human who forces her to face the reality that there are some things she can’t resist.

Zac Morgan has crossed the globe hoping to find comfort after a tragic loss has left him empty. He hopes Sullen’s Grove will give him peace and just a little taste of home. Even though he’s worked hard to keep his heart protected, he can’t stop the attraction he feels for the mysterious green-eyed college girl Dare.

Excerpt

I can see the blood trickle faster now that the point of the knife is pressed deep against his skin. His eyes are closed. He doesn’t see me. None of them does.

They are too focused on the fire and the sacrifice they are about to make in the shadows of its flame.

I crouch, the limb supporting me as I edge closer. I am outnumbered. If I pounce now, the Tribe will surround me in seconds. But, if I wait much longer, they will kill him.

There in the center I see everything familiar to me. I know them and somehow the wildness and violence I’m witnessing has stripped away the memories of who I thought they were.

I’m forced to feel my raw emotions spilling around me, consuming my choices, my inaction. How has this happened?

My ears twitch at the low growling sounds that start in the center of the circle, then make their way around until they’re so loud it’s deafening.

My head throbs from the sounds of their celebration. I don’t have time to regret the choices that led us here. Later. Regrets are for later.

The steel blade sinks against his skin, and my eyes narrow.

Now. I need to move now or he will be lost to me forever.

The forest will hear my roar and so will the Tribe. I leap from the branch, landing in the center, scattering the fire and the knife. They growl, their sharp teeth bared at me.

I’ve spent my life fighting for humans, but tonight I will fight until I’m dead.

Dare (Nox #1) by T.A. Foster Review

Hey readers! Ethan here on this Wednesday evening with an exciting post for you guys! Tomorrow, June 9, is RELEASE DAY for one of my most anticipate reads of the month! My Thoughts:

I've been on a pretty crazy roller coaster of reads lately, switching from genre to genre to find my best 5-star read. I've read historic fictions, sci-fi, romance, and even nonfiction this summer, but have really struggled to find reads that spoke to me. All it took was one adventure back into the paranormal genre to remind me why it reigns supreme in my book. Mix in some suspense and just enough romance to keep it interesting and you've got one heck of a story on your hands. Dare did not disappoint!

While I've read several were-shifter stories, I'm not sure I've ever read one quite like Dare. These days it seems the trend to have mortals know about the supernatural members of their community. Sometimes that approach really works, but most of the time I like a good old fashioned surprise! Foster does an incredible crafting this entirely original storyline. When Queen Dare must choose between tradition and her heart, dramatics ensue. Dare was so much, on top of being a paranormal romance, it's also full of suspension, action, and drama. The storyline will leave you reeling and begging for the second installment.

My absolute favorite part of this story was the characters. Dare is a strong, independent college aged girl with a huge secret, she's the Queen of her own supernatural pack of panther-shifters. Despite being a Queen who one would usually imagine as being extremely mature and responsible and... quite often boring, Queen is just like an average new adult female. She's got a plethora of problems, from college to her love life, Dare is so much more than a figurehead. She also can kick some major butt on the battlefield! Regardless of how awesome Dare is, my favorite character in this story was the male MC, Zac. Zac and I have a lot in common. Zac is a history scholar whose crazy journey has led him to Sullen's Grove. Finding himself in the midst of a small town with a deep cultural history, Zac immerses himself in local nor and legend, only to discover himself falling for the fabled 'panther' that resides in the forest. Even moreso than Dare, Zac has a lot going on in his story that really helped to develop his character. Like all great NA characters, he has his secrets, ones I cannot wait to read unravel. Throw in some excellent secondary characters and Foster has created a cast that rocks!

While the story definitely has a strong romantic plot between Dare and Zac, it's definitely not something non-romance readers should overlook. It's not erotic by any means and the sex scenes are few and written with class. No shifter-smut here folks!

As a paranormal novel, Dare really delivers on its' promise. In addition to roaming packs of forest shifters (male and female packs), Sullen's Grove is also home to a coven of powerful witches. Foster is no stranger to writing magic, having penned the acclaimed Ivy Grace Spell trilogy. While the witches do not play a huge role in the story, they do play a very important one. It isn't often that readers get the opportunity to see any kind of collaboration between supernatural factions so this was a treat to read. Any paranormal lovers like myself will find themselves pleased with the paranormal aspect of Dare.

I'll admit, the ending left me with a lot of questions, but the biggest one was definitely 'when can I read book two?!' I have no idea what Foster's intentions for this series are, but I can definitely tell you without hesitation that I will be here ready to devour each and every passing installment of this incredible series!

If none of that convinced you to rush out and add this one to your TBR, I don't know what else will. All I do know is that this was one of the most fun reading experience I have experienced in quite some time. From cover to cover, TA Foster delivers with an original story, crafted to perfection! Get settled in folks, the Nox are here to stay!

All-in-all, I am granting Dare by TA Foster a near-perfect 5-star review. Since I had the great fortune to beta-read this novel I saw it in multiple different stages which really helped to develop the story. Foster has delivered a true bookish gift to her fans. Speaking of her fans, anyone who is familiar with her Ivy Grace Spell series will love Dare! Foster's unique style of writing is a great fit for the New Adult Paranormal Romance genre! Don't delay, add this one to your summer reads list, today!

Exclusive Excerpt:

“Is it important to you that I like you?” I didn’t mean to be blunt. “Yes.” His arm brushed mine again, but this time I wasn’t sure it was an accident. “I’m just one little vote. You probably have the rest of the neighborhood in the bag. The book club was impressed with you.” I thought he might be digesting my statement. “Every vote counts. Every person matters. You matter.” We turned at the corner. I could see my driveway ahead. “You sound like an idealist.” The center of my chest warmed when I heard the sound of his laugh. I wasn’t supposed to feel that when I heard another man laugh. I wasn’t supposed to react at all. “I’ve been accused of worse. How about an idealist who wants his ideals to become reality?” He ventured a compromise. I wondered if he and Sarah had conversations like these. Did he try to change her stance on issues? Did he woo her to his side of the fence with charismatic comebacks? “Audrey?” “Yeah. Sounds good.” “I think I lost you for a second.” “Sorry, I was just thinking.” “I aimed too high with gun control, didn’t I? It’s an intense issue.” His expression changed. “It’s not that.” I couldn’t explain what was happening. I should be able to have a mature conversation with my neighbor. We should be able to stroll on the sidewalk. I should be able to be next to him without thinking about his lips. Lips that smiled like a movie star. Something was changing and I couldn’t stop it. There was enough light filtering through the crepe myrtles that I could see the muscles tensing in his neck. Had I said something wrong? The flowerbed that marked the entrance to Paxton’s driveway was a few paces from where we stood. I quickened my step. “I like talking to you. It’s nice to be able to talk without worrying about the consequences.” My eyes flashed to his. But there were consequences. Things were happening inside me. My skin was flushed, my nerves vibrating, my pulse thumping hard against the inside of my head. He couldn’t see any of it, but I wasn’t certain he didn’t feel it. I took a step, forgetting about the lumpy spot in front of his driveway, and almost landed on my face. Paxton gripped my arm, pulling me upward, saving me from landing facedown. “Whoa there. You ok?” “God, I’m sorry.” I shook off his hold. “I’m fine. I wasn’t watching where I was going. Stupid roots everywhere.” I noticed the way my arm ached from his grip. It was warm and pulsing. “Good night. Thanks for walking me home.” I wanted to run, speed past him. Run straight out of my skin. “But, it’s dark. Let me at least drop you off at your door,” he suggested. “I wouldn’t want you to get hurt.” I hesitated. There was a part of me hoping he would offer. “All right. We can cut through your yard. There’s a short cut.” “Show me.” I followed Paxton along the driveway, noticing the lights in my house were off. This was late even for Spencer. Maybe he had gone to bed. We passed the front porch, and I pointed to the path I used earlier that day. I could feel him behind me, taking each step I took. I grabbed one of the stiff magnolia branches and forced it to the side when I felt his hand land on top of mine. I stopped, frozen with dread, consumed with something I hadn’t felt in years. I held onto the branch, and Paxton held onto my hand, the warmth of his palm starting to heat my skin. His breath was heavy on my neck. It felt like waves pounding against me, each one eroding the barrier between us. I was afraid to turn around, afraid that if I looked at him I would unravel. As long as I stared at the branch, I was still in control. I couldn’t speak. With his free hand, he pushed the hair off my neck and blew across the collar of my shirt. My knees wobbled and I gripped tighter on the branch, forcing it to keep me upright. It was involuntary, but my head reeled back. He stepped closer. I didn’t know who I was. Hiding in the shadows while a man I barely knew touched me, like a woman who was available. A woman who was free to make choices about who touched her. I wasn’t that woman. My life was tied to Spence. Those choices weren’t mine to make, but I was making one. His was breathing freedom across my skin I didn’t know I craved. His hand canvassed my neck, taking my throat in his palm. He ran a finger down the center, pressing lightly as he crossed my collarbone. I didn’t think I could stand there much longer as his fingertips explored my skin. The cicadas echoing around our yards drowned out the sound of my heavy breath. I needed to stop this. But I craved it more. I couldn’t open my eyes when he turned me toward him. If I kept them closed, it was as if I were dreaming. This was all a wine-induced dream. I could tell myself it wasn’t happening. Standing under the branches with a man only hours ago I didn’t know, but was unquestionably drawn to. Pulled in by his voice, the look in his eye, the energy around him. How he managed to be rugged, yet refined. But I knew when his mouth took mine that it was real. I could taste the wine on his tongue and the roughness of his palms as he held my face. I savored the newness of him—our lips moving wildly. I clutched at his back. The kiss grew hungrier, our moans turning to whimpers as we snatched at the clothes between us. His teeth grazed across my throat, nipping at the soft spots tenderly then cutting in just enough to tease me. I tensed when I felt his hand slide along my stomach and push my bra out of the way. It was too much. I tried to break away and Paxton hung his head. “God, I’m sorry,” he whispered. I shook my head, feeling sick. “We can’t do this. I-I didn’t want you to kiss me. You weren’t supposed to kiss me.” My fists balled at my side. “I know. I know. It was out of line. I got carried away.” He ran his fingers through his perfect haircut. “I’m sorry. That was idiotic.”

My Thoughts:

After writing several reviews on the topic of paranormal books lately, you guys have surely picked up on the hint that I have a thing for magic. Any book with magic is usually my cup of tea. Fire Spell definitely fit the bill for me!

This third outing by T.A. Foster is more fast paced and enthralling than ever before. I read the first two books in this series quite awhile ago, so I was worried about how reading this third adventure would work for me. My fears were quickly abated after the first page where I was welcomed back into Ivy's life like no time had passed. Note: I will be rereading and posting a series review at some point in the near future. I am always left feeling satisfied after reading a T.A. Foster read because of how well her writing flows. It isn't often that I find an author who I can read their book, just as though it were a conversation between she and I. Fire Spell read like that for me.

The storyline was gripping, the romance was "real" and didn't seemed forced at all, and the villain was definitely villain worthy! I feel like the ending wrapped up pretty well, but I'm really hoping for a book four! Fire Spell really did a fantastic job of answering some lingering questions I had about the series and did a great job of filling in the gaps I was seeing! A note on the romance: as any of my regular readers will tell you I like to make a note about the romance element of the novels I read. Fire Spell, or the whole Ivy Grace Spell series as a whole is full of romance, however, it does not control the story. I love that about T.A. Foster, she can write a great paranormal story with an awesome plot and the romance doesn't ruin anything. That is a rarity in stories such as this. I would say that as a guy I find this whole series to be a relatively "safe read". You won't feel dirty or embarrassed after reading this! I cannot wait to read more from T.A. Foster and this series.

This was a relatively short and very fast read for me so I'm having a difficult time reviewing it without saying too much to give away anything from the plot! I will definitely go deeper into my series review so as not to give away any of the plot to readers who haven't gotten their hands of this worthy read yet! Overall I give Fire Spell a 4-star rating! It's a great third edition in the Ivy Grace Spell series that will definitely leave you satisfied and begging for more Ivy, Jack, Finn and the rest of the amazing cast!
