Sweet Contradiction

When Beth Michaels high tailed it out of the hole-in-the-road town she grew up in, she only had two goals. One--get as far away as quickly as possible, and two--never set foot in her parents' home again. But when she receives a heart breaking call from her childhood best friend, Jen, she has no choice but to turn her '56 Ford pickup back in the direction of Salem, Missouri to attend a funeral.
There's a new local in town when Beth arrives, and suddenly, it ain't all that easy for her to remember her rules for dating.

#1. Cookie-cutter-perfect guys ain't her type.
#2. Tie wearin' and church frequentin' is an automatic dismissal.
#3. Most importantly, never date anyone from small minded, conservative, Bible-thumping towns like Salem.

Unfortunately, Matthew Wright breaks all her rules and then some. Matt might be from a small town and have small town values, but that doesn't mean he fits into a little slot of Beth's preconceived notions. After all, ever so often good guys are good. Now if he could just convince Beth to let go of her past and give him a chance, he's pretty sure there's a whole lotta sweet under that prickly exterior.
His own ... Sweet Contradiction.

Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both. Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down. No one wants them to be together. Nowhere But Here Excerpt

From Oz's Point of View. Set up: Emily has been separated from her parents and after a long night of worrying, her emotions and exhaustion catch up to her and it causes Oz to have his first fluttering of emotion for Emily.

WIND BLOWS IN FROM THE NORTH AND A FEW pieces of Emily’s dark hair sweep across her face. One minute Emily’s a bright flame, then a gust snuffs out her light. Her body sways like a top at the tail end of a spin and I lunge forward.

Emily’s knees give out and her eyes roll back into her head. I catch her inches before she crashes onto the porch. She’s light as I swing her into my arms and her head circles onto my shoulder, reminding me of one of those rag dolls Violet used to play with when we were kids.

“Emily!” Eli’s on top of me, attempting to yank her out of my arms. “Open your eyes.”

Her eyelids flutter, but remain closed as her hand limply clutches my shirt. Eli rams his arms underneath mine and he makes Emily a rope in a tug-of-war. I should let her go. I should want to let her go, but then Emily goes and screws it up for me. “Oz.”

It was a damn whisper, but I heard my name on her lips and so did Eli. His eyes flash to mine and Cyrus’s words repeat in my mind. That girl trusts you. And screw us both for that.

“She’s exhausted,” I say. “Hasn’t slept at all tonight.”

Eli’s expression hardens as he glares at me. I’ve seen Eli throw a coma-inducing punch for less defiance and I readjust the sleeping girl in my arms. A reminder if he decks me now, he’ll be putting his daughter at risk.

Temporarily surrendering, Eli cups Emily’s face in his hands and angles her toward him. “Emily, please open your eyes.”

She does. It’s barely a crack and they’re completely glazed.

“Everything’s going to be okay,” Eli affirms.

“I want my mom and dad,” she mumbles.

“You’ll see them tomorrow.” Eli pushes a strand of hair from her cheek. “You’re safe here. I promise.”

She rejects Eli by curling into me. Her head fits perfectly in the crook of my neck and I loathe the wave of protectiveness that rumbles through my body. Emily’s fingers tighten their grip near my shoulders and the impulse is to shield her from the guys gawking at this intimate scene. Yeah, this is club business, but Emily never asked for any of this.

The Year We Fell Down (The Ivy Years #1) by Sarina Bowen Review

Hey Readers! Happy Friday! I hope you are all gearing up for an awesome start to your holiday weekend. I know I cannot wait for mine to start! Before you get too comfortable setting into your weekend plans, I've got a book review for you. This is the first book in what has very quickly become my all-time favorite NA-college series. Hands down, no question. So far there are four full length novels and a novella out for this one, and I've loved each and every one. What am I raving about tonight? The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen, the first novel in The Ivy Years series. Here's a bit about the book and our author before we get to my thoughts:

The sport she loves is out of reach. The boy she loves has someone else.

What now?

She expected to start Harkness College as a varsity ice hockey player. But a serious accident means that Corey Callahan will start school in a wheelchair instead.

Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley, another would-be hockey star with his leg broken in two places. He’s way out of Corey’s league.

Also, he’s taken.

Nevertheless, an unlikely alliance blooms between Corey and Hartley in the “gimp ghetto” of McHerrin Hall. Over tequila, perilously balanced dining hall trays, and video games, the two cope with disappointments that nobody else understands.

They’re just friends, of course, until one night when things fall apart. Or fall together. All Corey knows is that she’s falling. Hard.

But will Hartley set aside his trophy girl to love someone as broken as Corey? If he won’t, she will need to find the courage to make a life for herself at Harkness — one which does not revolve around the sport she can no longer play, or the brown-eyed boy who’s afraid to love her back.

Sarina Bowen

Sarina Bowen writes steamy, angsty contemporary romance from Vermont's Green Mountains. (Her ancestors began logging and farming Vermont during the 18th century. These were rugged, outdoor types without benefit of a laptop or a good latte. It boggles the mind.)

Sarina enjoys skiing, skating and good food. She lives in Windsor County, Vermont, with her family, eight chickens and too much ski gear and hockey equipment.

My Thoughts:

Reading as many novels as I do, it isn't often that I get to say that a series has changed my bookish life. It isn't often that I read a novel (or a series) where I have to stop reading multiple times throughout and take a moment to compose myself before continuing. Not only because of the feels, but because of the thought provoking reflections on our own lives that come to light. I've been complaining for months that NA contemporary was going down the drain. Book after book of meaningless romance, raunchy sex, and less than epic resolutions. My NA contemporary game lately has really been lacking. Enter Sarina Bowen. World=Exploded.

Before I really even get into this, I'm just going to go ahead and admit that, like a dummy, I didn't stop to review each book in this series after I finished. I simply could not stop reading. I've devoured the first four and I'm near finished with the fifth. Thankfully these are all standalones and can be read individually so I'm not worried about missing plot points. Let this be a warning to you all, once you stop this series, you will not be able to put it down.

In the past week, I have recommended this novel and series to EIGHT different readers. All eight of them devoured this read in record time and were begging for more. That's a lot of reading in one week folks. Trust me, this series will blow your bookish mind. Don't trust my words? Look at the near 1800 5-star ratings on Goodreads alone!

The plot to The Year We Fell Down is one of the more unique ones I have ever read. Usually in an NA novel we see one 'perfect' character and then another flawed one. In this novel, both characters had their flaws. Internally and externally. The biggest obstacles dealt with overcoming Corey's disability and Hartley's injury. I think the entire tale was weaved to perfection. While we watch their romance evolve, we don't just see the physical embodiment of love, we really see much deeper. The reader really learns about the deepest depths of romance through the stories of these characters. I won't say much to avoid spoilers, but by the time I finished the novel I has been from one extreme of the emotional circuit to the other. Laughter, feels, sorrow, heartbreak, I'd seen it all. Bowen came out of the gates with guns-blazing on this series and it paid of fin a big way.

I love reading about characters with special flaws. Corey is a beautiful, intelligent, strong willed woman, who just so happens to be disabled. Crippled by a freak accident, her lifeline (hockey) removed from her grasp. Hartley's story is nearly the same, only his injuries are only temporary. Both of these main characters were written to perfection. Even as someone who has never had to face the physical trials as these characters, I was greatly able to relate to their struggles. Their feels were my feels. I grew so attached to these characters that it was hard to let them go when the story ended. Especially Corey. This novel really showcases some of the more hard hitting and intimate hardships of being a college-aged student living with a disability. It's truly uplifting to see that these two characters were able to rise above and have such a powerful conclusion to their tales. As per the secondary characters? Bowen writes her characters so as the reader never knows who may pop up in future books. Just about ever character is seen again. It's a really neat situation! I won't go into the other characters here, because I'll cover them in their own reviews!

Can I just say that I wish I had gone to Harkness College? What a fun place to be? The classical architecture, the house divisions, the amount of school spirit and campus pride? Yeah. I can definitely get behind that. I said this earlier, but I believe that Sarina Bowen has written the perfect college setting within Harkness. It's so awesome! I really got the feel that I, too, was attending classes next to these characters! Talk about reader immersion!

Bowen covers a plethora of different themes in each of the novels in this series. The Year We Fell Down is full of great themes, but I believe the most prevalent one is learning to forgive yourself. Corey is having a very hard time adjusting to college life with her disability, but by the end of the novel we not only see hope in Corey's condition, but also her outlook on life. Corey learns again to lover herself despite her injury. Themes of forgiveness, family, and obviously, love also play huge roles in this story. I've learned lots of lessons from this series and it's made me not only a better reader, but also a better person for having read them.

As you guys can all clearly see, this was definitely the novel for me. It renewed my faith in the New Adult genre and I cannot wait to see what happens next. The world needs more authors like Sarina Bowen. Authors who aren't afraid to write the trust about being a New Adult. Authors who understand that college isn't all about fun. It's a stressful time fueled heartache and confusion. Balancing work, school, and any inkling of a social life isn't easy, and Bowen clearly knows that. It's so refreshing to see an author correctly portray the NA lifestyle!

All-in-all, it should come as absolutely no surprise that I am granting The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen a near-perfect 5-star review. With a book this awesome, you can't help but rave about it. And you sure can't beat a free book, any day of the week! Add this one to your TBR folks, you will not be disappointed!

*****

Well. Writing that review wore me out. This series people. Man. Like I said in the beginning, in just a weeks' time, this as become my all-time favorite college-themed New Adult series. I cannot say that enough. This series has brought me more joy than any read I've devoured in a very long time. I cannot wait to share my thoughts on the rest of the series. Heads up, one of them is now one of my all-time favorite novels. Yes. I just said that. Anyway, you guys be sure to check this one out, especially seeing as it's FREE! What are you waiting for? Check it out! Until next time, Happy Reading!

Trust the Focus (In Focus #1) by Megan Erickson Review

Hey readers! Ethan here on this beautiful Thursday evening (is it freezing where you are? Geez, you'd think it was November, not May!) bringing you yet another awesome review. This time we've got a review for a NA that was a bit off from my 'norm'. What are we raving about? Trust the Focus by Megan Erickson! Before we get to my thoughts, here's a bit about the novel and our author:

With his college graduation gown expertly pitched into the trash, Justin Akron is ready for the road trip he planned with his best friend Landry— and ready for one last summer of escape from his mother’s controlling grip. Climbing into the Winnebago his father left him, they set out across America in search of the sites his father had captured through the lens of his Nikon.

As an aspiring photographer, Justin can think of no better way to honor his father’s memory than to scatter his ashes at the sites he held sacred. And there’s no one Justin would rather share the experience with more than Landry.

But Justin knows he can’t escape forever. Eventually he’ll have to return home and join his mother’s Senate campaign. Nor can he escape the truth of who he is, and the fact that he’s in love with his out-and-proud travel companion.

Admitting what he wants could hurt his mother’s conservative political career. But with every click of his shutter and every sprinkle of ash, Justin can’t resist Landry’s pull. And when the truth comes into focus, neither is prepared for the secrets the other is hiding

About the Author

Megan worked as a journalist covering real-life dramas before she decided she liked writing her own endings better and switched to fiction.

She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, two kids and two cats. When she's not tapping away on her laptop, she's probably listening to the characters in her head who won't stop talking.

My Thoughts:

I've been sitting on this review for a long time, because I honestly don't know how to put all my thoughts into words. I write, often, in my reviews that I don't like romance novels. That I don't like this, or that, or what have you. I write that I don't oftentimes devour novels with content such as 'fill in the blank', but you know. All of this is starting to change. I've been at this over a year now and I've learned that my bookish mind is constantly conforming to new things. Every day I'm able to better relate, to better grasp, to better appreciate the world an author is writing in. Even if it is one I have no knowledge or experience in, a few select authors are really pulling me into the fold. Showing me that reading shouldn't ever be about content, but about quality. Megan Erickson, you ma'am, are a literary goddess.

It's funny, you see, that I finally sat down and read this out of all the Megan Erickson novels out there. Do you guys ever have that feeling that an author is everywhere? Like every time you turn on your social media there is someone raving about them? Every ad you see is for their books? That's how I came across Megan Erickson. It was a sign, she was everywhere!

One of my closest bookish friends, the incredible Ashley from BooksbyMigs is one of the biggest Erickson fans I have ever spoken with. She pimps out Erickson and her works on a daily basis. It was finally through her ravings that I took the plunge. I was looking for something different. Something in an NA contemporary that I hadn't seen before. Something that was going to be equally thought-provoking and feels-worthy. Ashley pimped out this series like none other, I dove in and she was right: I've come out of it a changed reader!

First and foremost, this novel is a m/m NA contemporary romance novel. This means that it is definitely not for everyone. On most days it wouldn't even be for me. I'll go ahead and touch on this part first. Yes, there are multiple m/m sex scenes. No, they are no 'dumbed down'. They are extremely well-written and emotionally driven. Erickson is one of those unique authors who can write sex and have it full of meaning and emotion. It doesn't have to be all fun, all the time. Erickson has a great balance of the fun and the emotional side of physical side of romance. I will admit there were a couple of pages that I skimmed, but overall, nothing was too graphic or uncomfortable for me to read in the least bit. Let this be a warning to anyone who isn't receptive to reading a m/m read that this may not be the novel for you.

In terms of plot, Trust the Focus wins props for being one of the most unique storylines I have ever come across in a work of New Adult literature. It's also a road trip novel, one of my favorites! I love a good road trip story. The story follows Justin and Landry, two best friends (with some more than friendly tension between them) traveling across the country to spread the ashes of Justin's recently deceased father. Along the way they find fun, adventure, and love. Crazy how that happens, right? I can't even hardly ride to Wal-Mart with my best friend. The story has lots of fun scenes involving amusement parks, big city escapades, and some beautiful scenery. Erickson has such a knack for writing settings, that I felt I was right alongside the roadtrip, taking in the country from the window of a Winnebago. While the novel focuses greatly upon the relationship between our two main characters, there are plenty of fun sub plots that make it about so much more than romance. By the end of the novel you definitely feel as though you've been on a road trip, in the best way possible! All the memories, without the crippling gas bill and leg pain from sitting upright in a vehicle for days! The only negative thing I'd like to add is that the novel really didn't end on the note I was hoping it did. I was a little confused by a few, very minor, details that seemed to come out of left field, but overall the plot was very fulfilling and left me with a great sense of hope for the future of the New Adult genre.

When it came to the characters, Erickson knocked it out of the park. The novel is definitely character driven and there was a lot of character development to be had. In the short span of a few hundred pages, we really get to know our main characters on an intimate level. It's crazy how real Erickson was able to make both Justin and Landry. I really appreciated that. When Justin gives in to his feeling for Landry, his entire life is turned on its' head. It was an incredible emotional and mental journey for Justin and I was both intrigued and impressed the entire time. Justin really does have a crazy story during this novel, but its' Landry who really balances out the crazy. Landry's character was written to perfection. His fun quirks and positive attitude were exactly what this novel needed to make it excel in my books. I love great character development, and Erickson killed it! There are tons of 'feels-worthy' moments here, so don't think you'll get off emotionally easy!

As with many novels of this nature, Erickson hits home with several important themes. The most important and prevalent one being to find yourself and stay true to yourself. A big part of this novel follows Justin's emotional journey to realize who he really is and way it will effect his life. For Justin, it's going to be a drastic change that will take years to acclimate to, but in the end the reader is left with many valuable life lessons about discovering one's true potential and the ability to find happiness and true love. Acceptance, coming of age, and family are also huge points in this novel that Erickson delivers to perfection. I was thoroughly impressed with her execution of this storyline and am anxious to see what she can accomplish next!

As you can see, I definitely had a lot of thoughts on the topic of Trust the Focus. It was an incredible read and I do believe I came out of it a better person. I am so glad that my friend recommended this series to me. Erickson has found herself another fan in me. I'm not quite sure what to add of hers to my TBR next, but I am pretty pumped to check out the second novel in this series, Focus on Me, releasing later this summer. I hope I like it just as much! Now I'm not here to say that I plan on reading a lot of m/m novels are here, but I have to say that all five I have read and reviewed so far have been amazing to me!

I am so excited to be giving Trust the Focus a very well-deserved 5-star review. Definitely outside my normal read, but an excellent addition to the NA spectrum. I can't wait to see what comes next for Erickson! I highly recommend this novel to any fans of the NA contemporary romance genre. You won't be disappointed!

Defend (A Lost Tribe #2) by Kallie Ross Review

Hey Readers! Happy Thursday! Ethan here with a 5-star review that's sure to rock your socks off. Looking for your next favorite read? Stop looking! I've found it for you! What am I raving about today? Defend, by Kallie Ross! Before we get to my thoughts, here's a bit about the novel and out author!

After emerging from her Descent into an uncharted underground world, Ollie Miller is sure of three things. First, her feelings for her best friend, Mateo, are far from platonic. She can't even look at Mateo without blushing at the memory of his lips on hers. Second, an evil man named Zadok is plotting to destroy the civilization above the surface. Third, there is no way to save the earth without returning underground. At least this time, she will have her mother along with Mateo and her friends to help guide her.
On their journey, noor, a mystical blessing guides them, but only if they’re willing to follow. Ollie’s determined to save the tribe from their evil leader, even if it means facing off with her long-lost grandfather. As Zadok comes face to face with his runaway daughter and his granddaughter, his plan starts to unravel, but is it too late to stop the destruction that he put into motion? Can the tribe survive and the surface be saved? Will Ollie learn to trust her own heart before it is too late?

Defend is the conclusion to Ollie's discovery of a lost tribe in Descent. Don’t miss this adventure, brimming with ancient secrets and a thrilling underworld.

My Thoughts:

A little over a year ago, I was introduced to a debut author with a big story to tell. A story of hope, fantasy, and exciting adventures into the unknown. At the time, I didn't have any work with debut authors under my belts. I'd heard enough horror stories to leave me a bit leery. Ever potential fear, however, was completely abated upon diving into Ollie's world in Ross' Descent. I quickly took the story and devoured its' contents as one of the most unique and original novels I read in 2014. This debut novel very quickly climbed the ranks and earned a spot on my 'Best of 2014' list.

From the day I closed the back cover to Descent, I've pondered what was next for Ollie, Mateo, and the gang. What adventures would await them in their next journey? After twelve long months of waiting, Kallie Ross has relieved us all of anxiety with the release of Defend. The thrilling, heart-stopping conclusion to the Lost Tribe duology.

Picking up shortly after the conclusion of the first novel, Kallie Ross hit the ground running and didn't stop for over two hundred pages. Unlike its' predecessor, Defend has nothing to lose. It's face paced, dark, gritty, and comes with more feels than you can ever hope to handle: Defend has it all.

When it comes to the plot, I won't say much. As this is such a quick-paced novel, I'd hate to give away any potential spoilers. While the story does end on a much happier ending, the 'getting there' sure isn't easy for our cast of characters. With Ross' clever use of some unique plot devices, she draws in the reader and leaves them hanging on, page after page. With so much happening, i even found myself having to reread passages to ensure I was following along. You have to keep up with this on folks, don't take it lightly. I will admit that I was a little shocked that a few things didn't happen, but I really loved the way Ross handled her story. She took the reins and steered it in the perfect direction for her audience.

I was worried the story would wrap itself up in a neat, glossy little package where every character got their happy ending. I was shocked to see that the ending really provided some surprising feelings. Character allegiances are tested and the plot twists will leave you rearing. There was a much darker theme to Defend than book one. As always, this is a risk in a YA novel, but in this case I really believe this played well into the favor of Ross. It's a true testament to her storytelling ability.

Defend did an incredible job of keeping with the characters and expanding on their personas for book two. The novel has a fairly large cast so it's easy to get confused with who is who and who may or may not be important. Thankfully, Ross did a fantastic job of keeping her main characters in focus. many times I see series with large casts where the author spends more time on secondary characters than focusing on where the story is heading. Ross' means of writing allowed for both character development and plot execution simultaneously. This is a big plus for any reader. The characters were complex. Ollie continues to channel her feelings towards Mateo (even if I was hoping she ended up with Gabriel, lol), while Alexis and Jesse really shine in their scenes. A handful of new characters added to the mix bring some much appreciated emotion to the storyline and really help to up the ante. Our sadistic villain, Zadok, was made to be much more human in this second installment. While we did see some truly evil moves from him, it was great to see his backstory and read about what really made him into a monster.

In true Kallie Ross spirit, the setting to this novel was spot-on. The noor filled underground caverns, ravaged by the effects of seismic activity have changed a lot since Ollie's first journey into the underground. Darkness, fear, confusion, freedom. Ross is able to display such a plethora of emotion and reflect upon numerous themes with her descriptive settings. I truly hope she pens the screenplay when this series is optioned for film!

With this timeless story of adventure and redemption, Kallie Ross has secured her spot on the bookshelf of our bookish pleasures. Fans young and old, and from all walks of life will be moved by Ross' gripping tale. This second installment proves that she is only beginning to hone her true talent. This reader cannot wait to see what the future hold for Ross and her career. I know I'll be first in line for all of her upcoming reads. What about you?

It should come as absolutely no surprise that I am granting Defend by Kallie Ross and incredible-well deserved, 5-star review. Ross wrote this story to near perfection and I am so proud to say that I loved it. I highly recommend this novel to any and all YA readers, fans of fantasy, adventure, and for those of you who are looking for a unique read you can share with your bookish friends. While I'm not sure if there are plans for more novels based in this world, I can tell you without hesitation that I would be downloading them if there were!
