Enslaved (The Last Orphans #3) by N.W. Harris Blog Tour (Excerpt + Giveaway)

Clean Teen Publishing presents Enslaved, the third installment in N.W. Harris's The Last Orphans Series.

If he loses her, he’ll lose his will to fight.

Shane and his friends survive the first major attack against the enemy, destroying the alien ships that came to harvest the children of Earth and turn them all into slaves. However, one ship escaped, and the aliens have captured Kelly. Shane will do whatever it takes to save her, but turning his back on his friends could jeopardize the whole mission.

The enemy invades Kelly’s mind, turning her into a slave soldier. She’ll follow their orders, even if it means murdering her friends, including her little sister and Shane. She is helpless, trapped inside her body while it performs heinous tasks under the direction of her new masters, while her sanity and desire to live fade.

Shane returns home to make a rescue attempt, only to find Kelly commanding an army of human slave soldiers, and she’s determined to make him join her ranks. Will Shane save Kelly before she gets to her sister, or will she help the enemy enslave the rest of humanity?

 Excerpt:

It’s going to get really bad out there,” Lily whispered. She’d slipped up behind Shane without him hearing.
“It already is,” Shane replied. He stepped to the edge of the roof and looked over the parapet wall.
The mob had passed and dissipated into the city. Moonlight reflected in puddles of blood and illuminated hundreds of fresh bodies, scattered all around the building on the streets below. He’d seen a similar scene after the adults had been killed, and now the bodies of children were piling up around the rotting corpses of their parents.
Armageddon’s Armageddon,” he said distantly, his vision blurring out of focus as he stared at the dead.
The sounds of fighting carried across Giza. Thousands of teens who wore the red armor of the Anunnaki slave soldiers pursued the other kids. Shane knew not only the slave soldiers were on a killing rampage. The kids without earbuds succumbed to the homicidal effects of the slave gene as well. Like the adults, they turned on each other. If the rebels didn’t find a way to shut the slave gene off, there weren’t going to be very many people left in the world to save.

The Last Orphans (The Last Orphans Series Book 1)

One horrifying day will change the life of sixteen-year-old Shane Tucker and every other kid in the world.

In a span of mere hours, the entire adult population is decimated, leaving their children behind to fend for themselves and deal with the horrific aftermath of the freak occurrence. As one of the newly made elders in his small town, Shane finds himself taking on the role of caretaker for a large group of juvenile survivors. One who just happens to be Kelly Douglas—an out-of-his-league classmate—who, on any other day, would have never given Shane a second glance.

Together, they begin their quest to find out why all of the adults were slaughtered. What they find is even more horrifying than anything they could have expected—the annihilation of the adults was only the beginning. Shane and his friends are not the unlucky survivors left to inherit this new, messed-up planet. No, they are its next victims. There is an unknown power out there, and it won’t stop until every person in the world is dead.

The Harvest Saga (Reap, Resist, Reclaim) by Casey L. Bond Review

Hey readers! Ethan here on this Thursday evening with a post that's a bit different from my norm over here. So last week I sat down and read this absolutely incredible box set trilogy and couldn't wait to review it for you guys. I couldn't stop reading so... I read the entire trilogy in about 24 hours. Oops. That being said, I'm doing a series review! The way this will work is I'm going to post the information for all three novels and then the buy links for each as well, then I'll share my thoughts on the series as a whole. Got it? Let's get this party started. This time on the chopping block I'll be reviewing Reap, Resist, and Reclaim, the three novels in Casey L. Bond's The Harvest Saga trilogy! Before we get to my thoughts, here's a bit about the novels and our authors:

The remnants of the United States of America have been divided.

From five enormous, technologically-advanced cities, the Greaters rule over the Lessers. In the Lesser village of Orchard, things are not as perfect as Abby Kelley thinks they are. When the apple harvest draws near and the Greater’s engineered fruits become too much for one village to handle alone, reinforcements from neighboring villages are called upon.

Having to choose between her best friend, whom she has no romantic feelings for, and mysterious newcomer Crew, Abby finds herself in the middle of a harvest that she had no intention of becoming a part of. She becomes involved in a situation that threatens the strict rule of the Greaters, and just might give the Lessers hope for a better tomorrow. But, can she help the Lessers without losing Crew? And if she chooses Crew, will she lose her best friend?

Abby Kelley returns home from the Greater city of Olympus to find that things in Orchard Village are bad, very bad. The Olympian Guard has taken over village affairs. The Lessers are being worked to the bone in the coldest winter Orchard has seen. Villagers are being dragged away for the slightest indication of what they call “resistance.” She needs to keep her head down and her mouth shut. But, it’s so hard to do when everything within you screams rebellion.

Kyan is coming on strong, trying to convince her to take a chance on him. Shocking news of Crew’s activities in Olympus sweeps through the Villages. When Abby is taken away by the Olympian guard, Kyan sends word to Vesuvius for help. But, no one could have predicted their idea of help or what they might expect in return.

Who will be left to pick up the pieces of Abby’s heart?

The Greaters have ruled over the Lessers since The Fall. They’ve taken Abby’s family. They’ve taken her friends. They’ve taken her hostage and threatened the villages.

Enough is enough. Freedom is worth fighting for. Love is worth dying for.

And the Lessers are done taking orders from the Greaters.

Reclaim…the epic conclusion of the award-winning Harvest Saga.

My Thoughts:

Alright readers, it's story time. So when I first joined the book community about two years ago, I was immediately told one thing: dystopian is dead. Coming right off the book highs of The Hunger Games and Divergent, the book world was fed up with all things dystopian. I won't lie, I really am not a fan of THG, but I loved Divergent, until the end anyway. I couldn't hardly believe that the bookish world could be through with this genre after only a few blockbuster hits. Surely there were more that I had missed. Two years later, I'm still hearing 'dystopian is dead', but you know what? Screw that. Since I've started blogging, I've read no less than ten new and absolutely incredible dystopian series that have absolutely blown other reads out of the water. Who is this 'they' that controls the market and who are they to say what is dead? My friends, if I have anything to say about it, dystopian is certainly not dead. In these two years, one fantastic series managed to slip under my radar. One series that, until I recently met the author, I had no idea existed. Could this 'new' series live up to the greatness of the dystopians before it?

Oh hell yes it did. And then some. The tower of greatness has fallen, my friends, a new author reigns supreme. Have you met Casey L. Bond?

I can honestly say without hesitation that The Harvest Saga is EASILY sitting in my top 5 dystopian series of all time. Yeah people. It was that absolutely incredible. Three novels and I couldn't even stop reading long enough to review them. I devoured this series folks, and if you're smart, you will too!

When it comes to the plot of The Harvest Saga, I can't even really begin to describe it to you in a way that even kind of tells you how awesome it is. If I had to comp it to something, I'd call it The Hunger Games-meets-Children of Men. So basically you have a society divided along resources where the women have become barren. Make sense? In all seriousness, I found The Harvest Saga to be one of the most unique and original creations that I have seen in months. I have never read anything quite like this. With action and plot twists on each and every page, it was one whirlwind adventure that I can't wait to relive again. Oh and did I mention the feels? Sweet Mother of Moses. Feels were caught. So many times. It isn't uncommon to expect heartbreak in a series of this genre, but I was clearly not expecting the level of heartbreak I felt several times. It was incredible. Bond pulled at my heartstrings in the greatest of ways. From Reap's opening paragraph to Reclaim's closing sentence, I was absolutely enveloped in the story Bond has created. I can't say that happens enough!

From the very beginning the series hits the ground running and the action doesn't cease until the nail-biting conclusion that had my heart racing from anticipation! I laughed, I cried, I caught all the feels. Kudos to you Casey Bond, you've crafted a literary masterpiece worthy of the highest of praises.

For me, the greatest part of this series was the characters. Unlike other series, Bond really kept this one with a smaller cast. The series really perfectly followed the storyline of a handful of core characters and didn't ever once stray away from our main objective. Leading to a series that can be read extremely quickly with ease. Something Bond did in this series that I hadn't seen successfully executed many times before was the use of multiple POVs in the story. I don't mean alternating POVs, I mean multiple POVs at some points. I didn't keep a tally, but I'd say at one point there were no less than seven ongoing POVs in this series and I loved each and every one. Incredible. Bond did such a great job in developing her characters that I felt like I was right beside them, feeling their pain and reveling in their triumph with each passing chapter.

One of the great things about this novel in my eyes was the equal representation of gender roles. Far too often I find myself reading from a female author and I experience page after page of male bashing or male characters that are so weak I can hardly finish the story. Not with Bond and this series, both genders and all ages; people from all walks of life are written as equals. Now that's not to say there weren't gender roles in Bond's dystopian, I just, as a male reader, found her interpretation of the society to be a refreshing and rewarding experience.

Bond's setting for The Harvest Saga was deep-seeded in a reality that I didn't find too far from the realm of possibility. While technology definitely played a huge role in the story, I really didn't find the story to be bogged down on the sci-fi side of things. In fact, most of the technologies present in this futuristic novel are present today. It was very easy to imagine the lifestyle these characters were living in a way in which I could smell the woodsy scent of Orchard and see the towers of Vesuvius right from the comfort of my living room. With true writing talent as Bond's I was transplanted into her world in the greatest of ways. The intricate settings did an incredible job in setting the tone of the story as it changed from place to place.

Oh man. As I mentioned before, this series was one full of feels. More than that, though, it was one full of hard-hitting themes that left me questioning my own place in society. Themes such as family, freedom, privilege, industriousness, growing up, trust, love, and forgiveness were all explored thoroughly in a heartwarming way. Bond clearly wrote this series as a labor of love as the humanity involved is great. You can tell through the pages of this deeply touching trilogy that Bond herself bled into this pages, something I did not take advantage of. This series is as delicate as it is enthralling.

As you guys can clearly see, I developed a deep love for Abby Blue and her plight for the Lessers. Bond's incredible writing style was both creative and gripping. The way she seamlessly flowed from one installment to the next without bogging the reader down with the backlog was an incredible feat as well. In all honesty, I think this series would best be marketed as one massive tome. Selling this in three separate installments is torture to readers who can't get enough. Thankfully. I was fortunate enough to grab The Harvest Saga Box Set just for that reason. I cannot imagine have had to wait for each of these wonderful novels to hit the shelves.

If Casey L. Bond isn't an author you're familiar with, I suggest you rectify that, quick. She's got quite the catalog of reads built up and I cannot wait to devour each and every one.

The Harvest Saga took hold of my book mind and wouldn't let go. I've fought a book hangover for days. With unique and original plotting, exciting characters, and emotion enough to warm the coldest of heart, Bond excels with The Harvest Saga. Move over Suzanne Collins, there's a new Queen of YA Dystopian hot on your tail! It should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone that I am granting all three novels in The Harvest Saga near-perfect 5-star reviews. This will definitely not be the last you hear from me about this series. Be sure to add it to your TBR today. I promise you won't be disappointed!

As part of her two year publishing anniversary celebration, Bond has marked down these novels to an incredibly low price! Don't miss your chance to get this entire series for next-to-nothing!

Shattered Memories by Susan Harris Review

Hey readers, Ethan here with another review for you guys. This week I finally finished a read I've been working on for some time (downside to reading multiple reads at once, it takes forever to finish one). This was by-far one of the most unique novels I've read in recent memory so I cannot wait to share these thoughts with you all. This time on the chopping block? Shattered Memories by Susan Harris. Before we get to my thoughts, here's a bit about the novel and our author:

A terrible tragedy forced Alana McCarthy to forget a year of her life. Now she is to be executed for a crime she does not remember committing—the murder of her entire family. Lost and alone, Alana is terrified of unlocking secrets buried so deep inside her mind that she's willing to forget the one person who could set her free.
Daniel Costello hasn't forgotten about Alana, and he will do anything and everything to protect the girl he loves. But first, Alana needs to unlock her memories and find out the truth about what happened the night her family was killed.

The day of her execution is set. Together, will Alana and Daniel be able to uncover the truth behind her family's deaths before it's too late?

My Thoughts:

With as many books as I read these days, it isn't often that I finish one and my immediate thought be "I have to re-read this novel'. The way most books are written, I read it once and I've got it, no need for a rehash. Then I met Susan Harris. You know those films you see where the ending is completely twisted and it changes the entire film, only to leave you re-watching the entire movie so that you can revisit the plot from a new angle? That was Shattered Memories, and man, I'm telling ya, it was phenomenal.

The plot of Shattered Memories is really hard to describe without giving away major plot spoilers, but I can liken it to reading inside a crystal prism. Each transparent face may seem clear, but a change in perspective will alter the reality. You can't escape until the very last page. It's incredible. I'm very familiar with stories that involve memory loss (it's a very common literary trope right now), but none have been executed in the fashion that Harris has with Shattered Memories. While sometimes I found the flashbacks a little boring, in the end, each individual episode plays into the final product, leaving me to only wonder what Harris' creation process entailed when crafting this unique story. The plot did not leave me disappointed in any capacity, in fact, I would have been thrilled with another 100 pages!

One of the great parts about this novel was it's small cast. Harris created a huge world, but didn't rely on dozens of characters to tell her story, it was very intimate and each character was carefully crafted to create the biggest punch in the storyline. Our MCs Alana and Daniel were created with the greatest care. Their characters are perfectly flawed and full of everything that I look for in leading roles. The side characters of Conners, Jaysen, Afisa, and others helped to ground the story to make it as realistic as possible. While I guessed the identity of the villain from the moment we met them, I still really enjoyed the heart-stopping conclusion that left me agog. I did not see the ending coming!

I've read many, many dystopian novels (they're a favorite of mine), yet I don't think I've seen any as thought provoking and groundbreaking as the setting created by Harris. Unlike others, this history isn't bogged down with technological advances, it's based in history, politics, and real world events: the true way a dystopian society with develop. The entire, intricate, history that Harris has laid out, creates the perfect setting for a novel so full of suspense and paranoia.

Shattered Memories was unique in so many aspects, but the one that stood out the most to me was the various themes portrayed throughout the novel. It's such a deep read. Nothing is as it seems and if you're taking everything at surface level, you're definitely reading it wrong. In a futuristic society (not completely out of the question), what kind of lives will the average citizens live? Harris crosses genres in a very 1984-meets-The Hunger Games kind of way to bring us a dystopian society that scares the daylights out of me. Throw onto that themes of love, family, death, abandonment, and survival, you've got a story to rival any others on your bookshelf.

As you can clearly see, I loved each and every page of this thriller. It was equal parts thought-provoking and suspenseful and so reflective on the future of our society as a whole. A chilling tale of redemption in a world with little hope. Susan Harris really pulled out all the stops and left me breathless. I am so excited to be granting Shattered Memories a hands-down 5-star review. Without question this is one of the best novels of its' genre that I have read. Massive kudos to Harris and her flawless storytelling ability. I haven't read anything else by this author, but I can tell you she's on my watch list now! Be sure to add this one to your TBR today!

Impervious by Heather Letto Book Blitz (Author Interview + Giveaway)

Hey readers, Ethan here with another awesome book blitz for you guys! This read sounds incredible and I can't wait to check it out myself! Here comes the info:

Impervious by Heather Letto
(Ascension #1)
Publication date: April 29th 2014
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult

The residents of Impervious are the remnant, the survivors of the war of Annihilation. And though the city is chockfull of pleasures to tantalize and entertain, a beast lurks in the corners, haunting the residents with its presence. The Beast, a mysterious and terminal illness killed off most of Generations One, Two, and Three. And as Gen-Four prepares to take the stage, a provocative, yet questionable, new method to avoid an untimely death incites a cultural rage. But Fran lives counter-culture, off the grid in true rebel fashion. With a life far from opulent, she scurries through dark tunnels, searching for hot meals with Pete while ditching the holographic security team. To her, it's a healthy trade-off. Unaccountability means The Council can't steal her sliver of hope, a belief that she'll see The Epoch arrive before The Beast can pull her into its Fetid embrace.

Heather Letto

I’m a book-writing, selfie-taking, latte-drinking, social media gal. I’m living a good life on the road as a full-fledged Bedouin (Well, except, my tent is actually a fully-equipped RV.) Me and my partner-in-crime (Benj) tend to hunker down wherever the skies are clear and the temps stay in the 70’s. We call ourselves Gypsy Nerds because we aimlessly wander the U.S. with glasses perched upon our noses and faces jammed into computer screens (for the first half the day... The second half of the day is typically devoted to playing because we’re also somewhat immature.)

Like most authors, the characters I create are my extended family. And like most readers, when the story ends, I get a little sad. In real life, I have two handsome, hardworking, grown-up boys who know how to make their Mama proud! *Waves to Joey and Mike!*

The Ascension Series is my debut into the world of YA fiction.

I’m living what I love and loving what I live!

Author Interview

Hey there! Thank you, so much, for including me on your blog today and getting the word out about the re-release of Impervious. (Book 1 of The Ascension Series.)

You said re-release? Tell us about the Impervious journey.

Impervious first launched last year (almost to the day… wow!), by Bookfish Books. (Waving to friends at Bookfish!) They were a great team, and I’m so grateful for the springboard they lent me last year. However, we did part company in the fall of 2014 when we realized we were heading in different directions with The Ascension Series. So, after kicking around the idea for a bit, I decided… “What the heck..let’s go indie!”

Indie, huh?  What do you think of independent publishing.

Although Indie publishing wasn’t originally on my bucket list, I can now say I’m happy to have gone down this path. The experience wasn’t as technically challenging as I feared it might be, and to be honest, learning to manage the ‘guts’ of the biz has given me extra nugget of satisfaction in my book.
One thing, I must admit, however… Sailing the immense Literature Ocean in a tiny self-made boat is a bit daunting (and lonely?) Therefore my advice to anyone seeking this path would be surround yourself with professionals and pick their brains… a lot!

Be honest… is there any Heather Letto in your main character?

Sighhhhh. Yes. Fran is snark. And being that I’m all grown up, I probably should have surpassed this particular quirk. However, I must admit, snarkdom is in my bones.  I want to be nice, really I do…
But in all seriousness, Fran’s journey of discovery from Impervious to the Open Air was very similar to my own Christian journey. Whether you call Impervious an allegory (Like Narnia) or perhaps my testimony, both Fran and I have walked (or crawled?) a similar path.

What’s next?

Well, God-willing, the sequel to Impervious (Implanted—Book 2 in The Ascension Series) will be on the shelves June 1st! (Just in time for that poolside read). I’m hoping to have the final book in the series available for a spring 2016 release.

Last but not least, we need some dirt on you… Give us something weird!

Okay, weird or not, I’ll let you decide, but here’s a secret: My husband and I have run away from home! Seriously. Last year, we packed up our house (well, more like gave away half our belongings and stored the other half), and became full time RV’ers!  Therefore, we live in a constant state of flux (and we love it!!) We call ourselves Gypsy Nerds. (He programs software, I write books… total nerds!). (If you care to follow along in our travels, feel free at www.lettotravels.wordpress.com)
So there you have it!
