Voodoo Butterfly by Camille Faye Review

Hey readers! Happy Friday! I don't know about you guys, but this week has been CRAZY for me. I haven't had any time to blog or read, much less review. This weekend is going to be all about catching up for me. First up, I have a review to share with you guys that I promised two weeks ago. Don't hate me! This time on the chopping block? Voodoo Butterfly by Camille Faye! Here's a bit about the novel and the author before we get to my thoughts:

Voodoo Butterfly by Camille Faye
Release Date: October 20, 2014
Publisher: Soul Mate Publishing
Genre: Paranormal, Romance, Women's Fiction

When twenty-five-year old Sophie Nouveau inherits her grandmother's voodoo shop she knows nothing about voodoo. Or her family's history of Mind Changers, who have the power to change evil people to good. To complicate matters, someone doesn't want Sophie in New Orleans and sends a series of death threats to scare her away from her new enchanted life.

Tipped off by her grandmother's ghost, Sophie realizes her mind-changing spell's been missing one magic ingredient: true love. If Sophie cannot experience transformative love, she cannot make her spell work, and she will be powerless to fight back when confronted by the one who wants her dead.

Camille Faye

Camille Faye lives in Missouri, loves on her hubby and two kiddos, and writes during the baby’s nap time. She grew up in a haunted house, which sparked her fascination with the paranormal. She went on to write for her high school and college newspapers, report local news for an NBC affiliate, and teach writing at universities in Missouri and Illinois.
When Camille made the decision to leave teaching in order to stay home with her kids, she decided to also follow her dream of writing a novel. She found the muse for her debut work, Voodoo Butterfly, during a family trip to New Orleans where she dreamt of a woman who had the power to change evil people good.
The Northwest Houston division of RWA named VoodooButterfly a 2013 Lone Star Contest finalist. The people and settings found in all of Camille's stories are inspired by her family life and her travels to 27 countries and counting!

My Thoughts:

I know after reading that synopsis, you guys probably will not be surprised to read about my raving here. A paranormal novel? Check. Witchcraft? Check. Voodoo witchcraft? Double check. Seriously people. Want to talk about being blown away? Let me introduce you to my new friend Camille Faye.

A few months ago, I met Camille through a mutual writers organization we are both a part of. We only live an hour away from each other, yet I had no idea she existed until recently! Camille hit the scene in a big way a few month ago with her 'official' release of Voodoo Butterfly. You guys all know that I love working with debut authors, but how did Camille's novel rank for me? You'll be glad to know 'somewhere close to the top'!

Sophie Nouveau was probably one of the best female characters I have read this year. She was extremely intelligent, rational, logical, and only slightly paranoid! Haha! When Sophie's life is suddenly changed following the death of a grandmother she had no idea existed, Sophie is whisked away from her 'safe' life in St. Louis, Missouri and transported down to 'The Big Easy" where all kinds of chaos ensues. Taking over her grandmothers Voodoo shop, becoming the next head Mind Changer, and finding love are all in store for Sophie in this 300+ page novel!

First, I would like to discuss the genre categorization for this novel. Several people are placing it well within the romance category. I have an issue with that. Sure there is a romance in this story, but it is not a romance novel, in my honest opinion. You could read Voodoo Butterfly and completely remove the romance portion of the book and still have a very full story. I'm getting really tired of novels getting labeled as romance, just because two people happen to fall in love. In my opinion, this one falls squarely into the supernatural-paranormal category.

The themes present in Voodoo Butterfly are numerous. From family ties, to overcoming hesitation, to coming to terms with your past, to forgiveness, acceptance, and spirituality, Camille Faye covers a vast array of topics. I strongly believe that there is something in this novel for everyone. Family plays a huge role in this story. Sophie travels to New Orleans to attend the funeral of her grandmother (that she never actually met) and has to suddenly come to terms that she missed out on a very important upbringing when she discovers that her grandmother was a prominent Voodoo priestess. What a world to fall in to, right? Sophie, straight laced and no-nonsense, balks at the idea of Voodoo magic being legitimate, but in the end has to succumb and find a way to wrap her mind around this phenomena!

Something you never, or seldom, see in a supernatural/paranormal novel is the presence of religion. And I'm not talking about mythological or satanic religion (because those are numerous in this genre), but full blown Catholicism/Christianity. I think one of the neatest parts of this book was how Camille actually made it a big point to take the time and do the research necessary to show to all of us the truth behind voodoo religious practices in New Orleans. It isn't all worshiping and making sacrifices to deities unknown, Christianity has played a major role in the development of that culture. Camille did an excellent job at portraying that history and mysterious tone that it often includes! A Catholic priest serves as one of the most important secondary characters, who would have thought? Definitely not something you see every day.

When it comes to writing about magic, you have to be careful. There are so many literary and historical nuances you have to be aware of. As previously stated, Camille has clearly done her research. By the time I finished Voodoo Butterfly, I was a believer, for sure! From gris-gris, to potions, to voodoo dolls, Camille has it all covered in such a way that really brings the reader into the world of Voodoo!

As per the plot. Here I have much to say, but I will refrain from any spoilers. It is a bit hard to follow at times. There is such beautiful imagery that I found myself getting lost in the description and the essence, but then not paying as close attention to what was happening in the story. You have to be careful, once you close your eyes, you're in New Orleans, and trust me, once you're there, it's hard to get out! As long as you read this story meticulously and capture everything Camille is trying to say, you will enjoy it as much as I did! The characters are spot on, and there are even a few huge plot twists. Nothing completely uncalled for, by any means, but definitely enough to keep you on the edge of your seat!

With Sophie learning to come into her new powers comes many trials, as you can imagine. I don't feel like Camille made Sophie's journey unbelievable by any means. It was written to near perfection. Far too often I read about people being introduced into a paranormal world and they just "accept" it. Not Sophie, well... not easily, anyway. It take a lot to make a believer out of Sophie. Being a proud native of the 'Show-Me State', Sophie needs all the proof she can get!

The end of the novel did take a major turn. It went from slightly paranormal to full on. I can't explain what happens for fear of spoiling the novel, but trust me, you will want to be sure to read all the way until the end. The emotional scenes in the end really brought the story home for me.

The ending also really leaves the story open for more installments in this series. The epilogue, while a little cheesy, pretty much solidifies the fact that there are more books on the way! I am excited to see what Camille Faye has in store for Sophie and the gang in the future!

All-in-all, I was completely blown away by this debut novel from Camille Faye. It isn't often these days that I find a book that I cannot put down, this, however, was definitely one of those. That being said, I am granting Voodoo Butterfly by Camille Faye a near-perfect 5-star review. An excellent debut novel from an author I know we will see great things from in the future. From cover to cover I believe this novel will appeal to fans across genres and of all ages. In need a a read that's a little different from the norm? I definitely highly recommend this one! Kudos to you Camille Faye!

A Tale of Two Funerals

When I was twenty, I lost my mother. She'd died in my arms of a heart attack in our tiny bathroom in our tiny house in Saint Louis. Even though I lived with the woman for two decades, I really didn't know her. At. All. But I'd known that for a long time. When I was a little girl, I had found a cigar box at the back of her closet that contained: a faded photo of a woman in a shawl; a corn cob pipe; a blank postcard from New Orleans; one prayer card to Saint Michael; a stack of unsigned love letters addressed to my mother tied in ribbon; a monarch butterfly preserved in a small case; and--the strangest item--a glass eye wrapped in black muslin. When I finally got up the courage to ask her about the box of secrets, she told me, "That's none of your business."

I'd brought the box with me to the funeral home, hoping someone would show up and explain it. Explain to me what the items meant. Explain to me who my mother was and unwrap all of her secrets just as easily as I untied the ribbon around the love letters...with one gentle tug. But no one came to the visitation. No one at all. I just sat there with the box on my lap, waiting, and her words pounded like a relentless wave: that's none of your business.
W
ell, actually, I thought, that's exactly my business. Since my wonderful mother left me alone, not even giving me a hint about the rest of my family (like who they were, where they were from, what they did, if any were still living), I'd have to figure it out all by myself. Like always.

"Lost," I whispered, afraid of the funeral home's lonely echo. I clung to the box, like it was a life preserver, as the tidal wave of my emotions hit.

Interview With Camille Faye

1. Hey Camille! Tell us a little about yourself. Why did you become an author? What makes Camille Faye tick? Give us some insight into the life of a debut author!

I am a WAHM (write-at-home-mom...haha) of two kids. Finishing a novel had always been on my bucket list, but I could never find the time. When I quit my teaching job to stay home and raise my family, I decided I would make the time to make that dream come true. My life feels exhilarating and overwhelming right now with all the marketing tasks I'm undertaking to make this book a success. My plan is to focus on book 2 in the Voodoo Butterfly series at the start of 2015.

2. The paranormal elements present in Voodoo Butterfly rely heavily on magic, particularly voodoo magic. What made you choose voodoo, how did you research all the specifics elements in the novel? Also, religion plays a huge role in the novel as well, how did the decision to rely just as heavily in Sophie's spiritual faith change your writing direction with this novel?

My book began with a dream I had in New Orleans. The first flash of the dream showed me a woman walking through the French Quarter at night (which is very, very dangerous in that city). I knew that she wanted someone to attack her because as soon as they touched her, their mind would change from evil to good. The second flash of the dream showed me Saint Louis Cathedral in NOLA absolutely covered in monarch butterflies. That plague of butterflies became my opening scene. As I developed Voodoo Butterfly, I decided that since voodoo and Catholicism are such vital parts of the culture in New Orleans, I would make my main character unexpectedly inherit a voodoo shop. The catch being, she would know nothing about voodoo or her secret power in the beginning of the novel.

Faith and love are huge sources of power in this book. In my own life, as I wrote, I was going through some pretty intense feelings of powerlessness, boredom, anxiety, and worthlessness. When I decided to stay home and raise my family, I felt a big void in leaving my teaching job because I felt like I lost a big part of my identity. Am I glad that I left the workforce to be with my kids? Yes. That said, it was a difficult journey for me, which required lots and lots of faith and love. Now I feel pretty balanced in pursuing my two current life purposes: writing and motherhood.

3. What has proved to be the most difficult part of writing thus far?

Writing. Ha! As a busy mom, I choose to commit to 15 minutes per day. Most days it turns into an hour or longer, but some days it's just 15 minutes. Motherhood is the hardest work I've ever endeavored, but I love it because it's completely fulfilling and my best creation. When both kids are in school, I'll be much more focused and spend longer stretches of time writing.

4. What are your plans after Voodoo Butterfly? Can you give us a glimpse of what else we can expect from Camille Faye in the future?

I'm working on book 2. Let's just say that everything you thought you knew about Jacques is going to be completely changed. Madame LaLaurie also emerges more in the second installment and she gives new meaning to the word "evil." As for Sophie, she's going to lose a lot in book 2 and it's going to devastate her world. Of course there will be magic and love. But will they be enough?

5. Family, friends, mystery, and love are all huge defining themes in Voodoo Butterfly. Do you have any one particular message you would like fans to get out of this novel?

I truly believe that faith and love can help you become anything, but it's incredibly hard to go it alone. Family and friends lift you up, providing love and support to help you scale mountains on your personal life journey. I never get tired of hearing stories about people who overcome tragedy or difficult circumstances to rise above and create a better life for themselves.

Quick, don’t think!

Favorite color? Purple

Favorite beverage? Red wine. LOL.

If you were an animal, what would you be? Tiger

Dream occupation (aside from author)? Travel...If I could travel 2-6 months out of the year but also be able to bring my family, and make money doing it, that would be perfect.

Describe yourself in five words: Obsessive, positive, family-oriented, spiritual, patience-challenged (Camille that looks like 7 words for me. Way to cheat with those hyphens :P)

Halloween Spotlight Interview

What is your favorite supernatural genre (Witches, zombies, vampires, werewolves, etc) and why?
"Hi, my name is Camille and I'm a Twilight Mom" [Insert scene from a Twilight Anonymous meeting]. I'll admit it...I'm a sucker for pop culture, so I'll gravitate toward whatever the masses are talking about. I am loving The Walking Dead TV series right now. But I also love classic reads like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's Dracula.

What is your favorite horror film and/or read?

The Exorcist. To me, you cannot get any scarier than that. And since I'm from Saint Louis, where a large portion of the real life exorcism was performed, it feels even more real to me. The actual case was about a boy (not a girl like in the movie) from Maryland, whose family came to Saint Louis to get help. He stayed with relatives and the home remains standing; weird things continue to happen there. The hospital where he was treated was torn down, but there's still a huge crack across the parking lot that appeared during the exorcism. They have tried, many times in the decades since, to repair the crack and it CANNOT BE FIXED. Crazy, huh?

What is your favorite Halloween costume (or your favorite that you have worn/have seen)?
My family is going as Monsters Inc. this year. My toddler daughter looks just like Boo, so I made her a purple tube with eyeballs popping out of the hood. My son will be Sully, my hubby will be Mike Wazowski, and I'll be his girlfriend with the snake hair. (we're going to need pictures of this costime, Mrs. Camille!)

What is your favorite Halloween candy?

Anything chocolate. There is no Switch Witch at our house and I'm not afraid to admit it: I steal my kids' Halloween candy :)

What is your favorite part about Halloween?

Our neighborhood does a Halloween parade where we block off the street so none of the kids get hurt. The adults hand out candy, cozy up to their fire pits in the driveway, and grab a beer, while the kiddos Trick-or-Treat. It lasts about a half hour or so, but I gave away four big bags of candy last year. It's so popular that people even invite their extended family members to join in. Good times, good times.

What is your favorite Halloween memory?
One Halloween (when I was about 7), my mom, my sister, and I had just gotten back from showing our costumes to my grandmas. The house was completely dark. My dad snuck up from the basement, dressed as a werewolf, and scared us so bad. He did a really good job: messy hair, grizzly beard, fake teeth, brown face paint, and torn clothes. I thought it was hilarious because I just LOVE being scared and facing my fears. (Even when I was little my parents called me Evil Knievel because of my daredevil ways.) But my 5-year-old sister was so scared she refused to go Trick-or-Treating with us.
