Holy and the Fallen (Watchers of Men #2) by Amanda Strong Review

Hey readers, Ethan here on this hot Thursday evening to bring you a review for an incredible young adult novel. Last week I posted my five-star thoughts on book one in the series and I am so excited to continue with this series. On the chopping block this time? Holy and the Fallen, the second novel in The Watchers of Men series by Amanda Strong. Here's a bit about the novel and our author before we get to my thoughts:

With the Northern City under construction, Micah and Eden's lives are about to change again, when Micah is given new directions. It's time for the Watchers, the fallen angels buried in the earth, to make their final choice—serve the captain or choose to remain loyal to Semjaza, the dark leader who led them to their downfall. Micah soon learns, however, that Eden is the one thing Semjaza wants more than anything, and he will go to great lengths to obtain her.

Torn between fulfilling his mission and not wanting to leave the ones he cares about, Micah must learn what it truly means to be the captain's seer. Eden's friends will be tested as they try to protect her, while each one of them discover there may be more to their gifts than they'd thought. In the war between angels and demons, gifts will be discovered and truths uncovered. All the while, one moment of weakness can prove to be the undoing of them all.

My Thoughts

Last week I posted my review of The Awakener, book one in this series, and raved all about how much I loved the read. Honestly, when it comes down to the bottom line, what really appealed to me about this series was just how unique and different it was. Sure the concept isn't completely unheard of, but Amanda Strong's delivery sure is. I have never seen an author tie in so many literary elements together into one genre and make it work. It truly was a beautiful story. Flash forward a week later and I absolutely devoured the sequel, Holy and the Fallen. If I thought I loved Awakener, there just aren't words to describe this one!

Holy and the Fallen picks up pretty much right where we left our character in Awakener so I can't say much there in an effort to avoid spoilers. When it comes to the plot, Strong really took it a step farther with this second installment. The stakes are much higher and, now that the foundation has been laid, the plot is gripping and non-stop from cover to cover. Action, suspense, and intrigue await you at every turn. I could not have been more pleased with the plot if I tried. I'll admit I was a bit hesitant to see how Strong was going to handle the increased stakes while keeping her story at a clean YA level, but she pulled it off incredibly.

Strong's writing is truly a labor of love. It's clear in each word how much research and thought she has put into this series. Each little nuance and character trait is important and no detail is too small to be overlooked. Remember everything you read, there are clues everywhere. And just when you think you've got it figured out? BAM! She throws a wrench in your plan. I love the constant state of surprise, it had my itching for more!

As with Awakwner, HatF has a huge cast of characters, and with each passing novel, it's only getting larger. While some of these characters are merely mentioned in passing, each is of vital importance to the plot. Don't worry, it's nothing an attentive reader cannot handle, but just a warning. Unlike Awakener, this story isn't just told from Micah and Eden's stories, we get chapters devoted to all of our MCs. With such a huge cast it's really interesting to see so many things going on at the same time.

Strong really ups the ante with her settings in HatF. The entire story has turned into a worldwide journey to build the Golden Cities and save civilization. From America to Europe and more-to-come, Strong puts such great description in her setting that I merely had to close my eyes and I was there in the vineyards of central Europe, grazing through the cornfields of DeKalb County, Illinois. Each setting is beautifully written to set the tone for the storyline with great accuracy.

This series deals with a huge plethora of themes, but the primary one that is reoccurring is spirituality. As you can read in the synopses for this series, these novel rely heavily on religious retellings, themes, and stories from Christianity. While this may be a turnoff for some readers, I was blown away. Strong was able to take a vast amount of inspiration from religious texts and transform them into a young adult, supernatural tale for the ages. It's by no means a church sermon, but readers will find themselves immersed in the history of the sources she quotes and may send you on an adventure of your own. I love how Strong is able to influence such thoughts with her words.

If you read my review of Awakener, you'll remember that I noted how 'clean' it was. That was my largest complaint of the story. I was really blown away to read how much more 'mature' HatF was. The stakes are higher, the romance element is more true-to-life, there is a bit of language, the tone is darker, it's definitely on-par with what I would expect from a story in this genre designation.

With all this being said, Strong has already gone on to say that there will be at least two more novels in this series. I have no knowledge as to when we can expect more from The Watchers of Men series, but I do know I'll be first in line to see what Strong has in store next for Micah, Eden, and the gang!

Another grand-slam from Strong, Holy and the Fallen will leave you on your knees, begging for more! A gripping sequel full of emotion from cover to cover: you won't be able to set this one down! All-in-all, I loved this novel and it should come as no surprise that I am granting this one another near-perfect 5-star review. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to shake up their TBR with something a bit different. Fans of YA, supernatural, and uplifting stories will find Holy and the Fallen to be right up their alley!

The Awakener (The Watchers of Men #1) by Amanda Strong Review

Hey readers. Ethan here on this sunny July Monday to bring you a review I've been dying to share with you all. You guys know I read quite a bit and most of them are new and upcoming reads. Unfortunately, thanks to my schedule, I don't have a lot of time to go back and read older novels. So far, July is shaping up to be a slower month for me so I am taking advantage and trying to catch up on my backlog of books from some authors I've been so excited to read from. I hope you guys are ready. First on the chopping block? The Awakener, the first novel in The Watchers of Men series by Amanda Strong. Before we get to my thoughts, here's a bit about the novel and our author:

Seeing Micah for the first time in years, Eden wants nothing more than to run and hide. Tall and handsome, Micah is no longer the scrawny kid she remembers. Eden tries to slip by him unnoticed but unfortunately, her body acts on its own accord. In a moment of sheer embarrassment, she throws her arms around his neck, unaware she's just changed her childhood friend forever.
With his eyes opened to the realm of angels and demons, Micah soon discovers he has become the Seer, called to save the world from the flames that will cleanse the earth to start it anew. Shy and awkward, Eden stumbles through high school clueless, her guardian angel shadowing her every move, and keeping her safe while she unknowingly “awakens” others to their spiritual gifts. Micah will not only need those Eden has touched to complete his mission, he will need Eden in ways neither one of them thought possible.

With angels and demons fighting around them in a battle that began long ago in the ancient City of Enoch, both Eden and Micah must find their own personal courage in order to triumph.

For if they fail, they could lose everyone they love.

My Thoughts

Oh wow readers, I don't even know where to start with this one. I first came into contact with Amanda Strong about a year ago when I first started working with Clean Teen Publishing and heard all these incredible things about her works. Unfortunately, time got in the way and I haven't had the time to devote to her works, until now! And boy and I kicking myself for waiting. I cannot believe this hidden gem of the literary world has been hiding from me for so long. It. Was. Amazing.

First let me start out with my few hesitations and critiques, as per my norm.

This is a paranormal angels vs. demons story at its' core, but it's way different than any novels I've ever previous read in the genre. Why? Because Amanda Strong went the extra mile to build a very detailed and specific background and historical foundation for her novel. That being said, any history that ties in with angels and demons is going to deal with religion. This is a pain point for some of my readers so I want to point it out. By no means was the novel preachy, but you need to have at least a working understanding of Christianity and faith before diving into this novel, otherwise I'm afraid you won't enjoy it as much. That being said, I enjoyed each and ever words I devoured. You don't have to be a religious scholar to appreciate the work that Strong has put into this history. While it has it's roots in history, she definitely takes a few liberties, placing this one in the 'historic fiction' category in that sense.

This novel is an extremely clean novel. No foul language, no sex, and very few adult situations. It's probably one of the cleanest novels I've read so far this year. While it didn't bother me at all, I know some readers are a bit put off at a 300+ novel with all PG -content. While a few curse words and a bit more age-appropriate romance certainly wouldn't have offended me, I found the novel to be fantastic even in its' current state.

Now that we've got the negatives out of the way, let's rave.

I think what really made me fall in love with this story the most was the uniqueness of the plot. Being such a history-buff myself, I am familiar with a lot of the narrative that Strong fed from for this series and I believe she wrote it to perfection. Ancient history or even biblical history often doesn't give a lot to work with, it's often times up to the interpreter to make their story their own. Strong did an incredible job of crafting her own narrative from one with very little information. It takes true talent to build an intricate story as this with what we are given. I won't say much because I don't want to give away the story, but fans of angel vs. demon stories are going to absolutely devour this read, I sure know that I did!

So I'll go ahead and mention that this series has a huge cast of characters. Huge. Like, so many characters that I wish I had a character map. Just a warning. From the beginning basic storyline of the friendship and budding romance between Micah and Eden, the characters explode out of the background. Micah's friends. Eden's friends. Family. Neighbors. School teachers. Angels. Demons. Guardians. The list goes on and on, I would probably estimate that there are fifty characters in this first novel and that 30 of them are of extreme importance. Seriously, this isn't a read you can brush over, it's a massive tome that demands your fullest attention. I can assure you, however, that the reader is greatly rewarded by the end.

As I mentioned in my critiques, Micah and Eden are very safe. They're teens with teenage issues, but we really don't see much of them. They play it safe and work towards their goal with very little 'teenagery-ness' in-between. While I can respect that, I am hoping for a bit more maturing in book two.

I'm not sure if any of my readers are familiar with Digimon or not, but this novel really had some aspects that really reminded me of such. Seven kids, each with a special power are singled out, collected, and given a powerful guardian being to watch over them while they fight evil. While not completely in the same realm as Digimon, I saw a few comparisons and I loved it. I just thought I'd point that out, being the huge nerd I am.

The settings for The Awakener was numerous and all written to perfection. From their sleepy, yet ritzy, hometown to the ancient city of Rome, Amanda Strong does an incredible job describing her settings in such a way that the tone is set for each scene. Be it an ominous feel, suspense, or even a fun scene of reflection and relaxation, Strong really knocks it out of the park. Towards the end of the novel we really being to see some action that is reflected perfectly in the setting of the story. I won't give anything away, but it's definitely something to watch for.

The Awakener deals with many, many mature themes: spirituality, faith, accepting responsibility, and death. It's only through overcoming all of these themes and gaining an acceptance of their fate are our casts of characters best able to determine the future best for them. They come together in such a perfect way to creature such a bond that Strong has created beautifully through the weaving of her words. These themes are by far the most mature thing about this novel and it will leave even the most seasoned of readers pondering their own lives. It was truly a thing of beauty.

As you can seem regardless of the few critiques I had of this novel, I still loved every second of this read. It was a big jump for me and it didn't end up being anything like I originally envisioned. The Awakener is an incredible read: original, captivating, and a page-turner until the very end. Amanda Strong is an author I will most-definitely be adding to my 'watch' list!

All-in-all I am granting The Awakener by Amanda Stong a well-deserved 5-star review. I devoured this novel and absolutely cannot wait to catch up on the rest of the series. Anyone who is looking for a new read that's unlike anything they've read before will definitely want to add this one to their TBR!

ENJOY THIS EXCERPT FROM HIDDEN MONSTER:

Step, step, breathe, breathe, step, step, breathe, breathe. My shoes kept a steady rhythm with my burning lungs. I veered off my regular path, opting to hear the crunch of the leaves beneath my feet. The image of my mom’s disapproving face was ignored as I leapt across a gurgling brook. Breathe, breathe, crunch, crunch.

If I wasn’t mountain biking, I was running. I craved speed and freedom. I had to escape the oppressive perfection of living in the Campbell home. Thinking of my two older sisters, one model and the other a star volleyball player, my legs lunged, lengthening their stride. Not good at team sports and terrified by cameras, I knew my family felt my height was wasted on me.

Even Jeremy gives me a hard time.

A stitch pinched my side. Breathe, breathe. I knew I was going too fast, not pacing myself right. Something was urging me on, pushing me to scale the hill before me, and plunge deeper into the woods. I refocused on my rhythm, my inhales and exhales, and my body realigned itself, goose bumps shooting across my arms. There it is. I’d hit my second wind and I surged on, not caring where my feet led.

It’s freedom! Complete and—

There was a rush of air, a whistling in my ear, and a sting to the back of my arm. Instantly, I tumbled to the ground, sliding into the damp morning dew. Cold dirt filled my nostrils as blackness enveloped me.

***

I heard my own labored breathing long before I realized I was somewhere in between awake and asleep. Forcing my eyes open, I gasped. My senses took everything in at once—the smell of wood shavings, the scratchy ropes on my wrists and ankles, and the pressure of the mattress beneath my body. I screamed, but the empty room with wooden floors and stacked logs for walls was empty. No one burst through the door in the corner.

Realizing it was useless and only making my throat raw, I fell silent. Panic flooded me. How did I get here? I pressed my thoughts to retrace my steps, but my mind felt sluggish. My last memory was running in the woods just before sunrise. I could still feel the burn from the autumn air hitting my lungs. Now the solitary window painted a yellow rectangle on the floor. The room felt stuffy. It’s probably late afternoon. But is it the same day?

The minutes rolled slowly into hours, the silence suffocating. What had my therapist said to do when I was scared? Breathe deeply and don’t panic. It was too late for that; all the years of therapy after my childhood accident were rendered useless. I’m drowning all over again. Only this time, it wasn’t water filling my lungs but pure fear and terror pressing down on my chest. I gulped in dry air, my eyes burning with tears.

No one’s coming to save me. A sob escaped me as the real horror of the situation washed over me. I’m tied up. Someone knows I’m here. What would happen when they came back? As the last rays of light were snuffed out by the shadows of the night, that someone came through the wooden door.

For seventeen-year-old Samantha Campbell, running back woods trails usually means freedom from her less-than-perfect life. That is, until the day a morning run turns into a living nightmare. When Samantha wakes up to find herself bound to a dirty, pinstriped mattress, she realizes she’s anything but free. With a masked abductor repeatedly injecting her arm with an unknown substance while holding her captive, Samantha tries in vain to find out what he wants, but he refuses to speak. Until the day he breaks his silence and his twisted words are worse than what she’d imagined. He promises her one day she will fall in love with him but the best part will be that she won't know who he is... until it's too late.

Finding herself freed from captivity, with her captor still at large, Samantha is on guard against everything and everyone around her. Unfortunately, walling up her heart proves difficult when eighteen-year-old Blake Knightley moves in next door. When Samantha starts experiencing strange changes within her, she realizes her captor may have left her more damaged than she originally thought. Now she must turn to Blake for help in order to unearth the truth behind the monster who started this all... or risk experiencing worse things than just falling in love.

Halloween Spotlight Interview

What is your favorite supernatural genre (Witches, zombies, vampires, werewolves, etc) and why?

Definitely angels/demons!  I find them fascinating albeit too freaky to write about when home alone, at night, in a creaky-settling house ;)

What is your favorite horror film and/or read?

Oh, where to begin?  One of my favorites when younger was John Bellairs, The House with a Clock in its Walls.  As for movies, Sixth Sense, still gives me the creeps!

What is your favorite Halloween costume (or your favorite that you have worn/have seen)?

The year I was Alice (and attempted to make my own costume!)

What is your favorite Halloween candy?

Candy Corn! Even though one handful makes me sick, I still can’t help buying them every year!

What is your favorite part about Halloween?

Costumes!!!  For sure!  I love any excuse to dress up and all the spooky decorations!

What is your favorite Halloween memory?

Trick or treating as a kid, not stopping until you couldn’t feel your fingers or toes, the plastic mask sticking to your face, coming home to divvy your loot by type and size (had to make sure you got the most Butter Fingers) and eating until you wanted to puke!   Ahhh…those were the times!  Now I get to do it all over again with my kids :)
