Eternal Sacrifice (Mortal Enchantment #3) by Stacey O'Neale Blog Tour (Review + Giveaway)

Hey Readers! Ethan here with an exciting post for you today. I am so honored to be presenting this blog tour post to you all today. Why is this post so important? It's my review of the series finale to one of my all-time favorite series. It's such a bittersweet moment here at One Guy's Guide to Good Reads, but let's get started. Before we get to my thoughts, here's a bit about the novel and our author:

The explosive conclusion to Stacey O’Neale’s award-winning Mortal Enchantment series reveals the secrets of the fantasy world!

Valac has stolen two of the sacred objects. In a bid to rule all four courts, he has threatened to use Excalibur to cut the mist that protects Avalon—ultimately ending the lives of thousands of elementals. As the Akasha, Kalin has the power to stop him. And she refuses to lose anyone else she loves.

Will she have to sacrifice herself to save them?

Desperate to save Kalin’s life, Rowan searches for the long-lost creator of the mist. But what he finds is the very last thing he expected. Everything he thought he knew about his past is turned upside down, and he questions whether he’s meant to be the savior or the elemental that destroys them all.

Told from Kalin, Rowan, and Marcus’s perspective, the final installment to the series follows their journey of courage, duty, sacrifice, and love.

My Thoughts:

Series finales are always one of my favorite and least favorite reviews to post, at the same time. How can that be? While I'm so overjoyed to rave about an incredible finale (they are too few and far between), I hate juggling the bittersweet emotion of finality meaning I'm saying goodbye to another cast of characters that I've grown to love. I won't lie folks, as many series as I've read, this one will forever be a special one to me. The love and hard work that author Stacey O'Neale has poured into this series over the last two years is unquestionable. While I dreaded the final chapters, how did Eternal Sacrifice finish up? After three wildly successful stories, did O'Neale end the series on a great note?

Absolutely. Prepare for the feels, readers. Tissues are a must.

When it comes to the plot of this one, I have quite a bit to say, however I have to restrain myself here for two huge reasons that happen to be my only critiques of the novel. First, this one is super short. Way shorted than most finales I have read, however there is a plus side to this I'll get to in a bit. Second, the pacing of this novel is extremely quick. There is little-to-no downtime so if you aren't careful, you will miss something. So, sharing plot details is a little tricky. What I can tell you is that Eternal Sacrifice is probably one of the most unique novels I have ever read in one specific aspect: it's only the 'good parts'. Does that make sense?

Imagine reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows without the 350 page camping trip and only a book full of 'The Battle of Hogwarts'. That my friends, is Eternal Sacrifice. It's short, but that's because O'Neale ensures her readers are fully satisfied. There isn't anything standing in the way of Kalin, Rowan, and the Avalonian forces of good to finally put an end to Valac and his reign of terror. With knowledge and hope on their sides, our heroes must stop Valac at any and all costs. Every breathe is precious and the battles fought in this finale will determine the fates of both their world, and ours, forever.

The costs will bring you to tears. Over. And over.

With any great series finale, some characters must make the ultimate sacrifice for peace and safety for the ones they love. This novel is no exception. Again, I'm going to refrain from spoilers, but don't worry, O'Neale definitely teaches the reader to read on the very edge of their seat and always to expect the unexpected. With plot twist after plot twist, I was shaking with anticipation by the novel's final chapters.

In a unique twist, O'Neale introduces one major character in the finale to the story, however anyone who has followed the series closely may not be that surprised by their appearance. What I can definitely say about the characters in this one is that Stacey really changes the game, right from the very beginning. We see several characters in an entirely new light, casting doubt over any preconceived notions the reader may have. I loved the idea of waiting until the end to reveal the true dedication behind the actions of some characters in this series. On that same note, seeing into the psyche of some characters on a much more personal level really opens the reader's eyes to the 'full' story behind O'Neale's literary universe.

Speaking a bit more on the characters, this one take three different POVs into consideration and crafts them in the most delicate of ways. Kalin, Rowan, and Marcus all play pivotal roles in the finale, but for entirely different reasons. They each have their own trials to face before the final battle to save Avalon. Thankfully, O'Neale really satisfied me with her ability to craft such individual storylines within such a fast-paced story. Interweaving the three storylines within such a powerful conclusion is a true testament to the literary landmark that is Stacey O'Neale.

Love, forgiveness, sacrifice, brotherhood, family, responsibility: I could go on and on with the plethora of themes O'Neale has implemented within Eternal Sacrifice. Each is fully explored and written to perfection. I'm not even lying when I say this story brought me to literal tears on at least three occasions.

As a series finale, I was greatly impressed. While my thoughts and predictions did not come true, I was still genuinely pleased with the end result. It was an ending that 'made sense' for the series, even if it wasn't particularly the one I was most looking for. That being said, the series ends rather abruptly and doesn't exactly tie up every possible loose end (as it shouldn't), leaving the door open for potential novellas or spin-offs in the future. I know this reader would love more insight to this world and the future of these characters. It is my belief that all readers of this series will be greatly impressed by the honorable finale O'Neale has crafted, sending off her series with respect and memorable flair!

As if it isn't already obvious by the amount of raving I have done for this series over the past two years, I am absolutely enamored of Stacey O'Neale's Mortal Enchantment series. I absolutely cannot get enough of this incredible story, the unforgettable cast, and the truly deep emotions found within the pages of these four stories. While I may have had a few issues with the finale, I still was beyond thrilled with the end result as a whole. That being said, it is my honor to be granting Eternal Sacrifice a near-perfect 5-star review. I highly recommend this series to any fans of YA, paranornal. elemental fiction, romance, or adventure novels. You will not regret this read!

Intro to Stacey O'Neale:

So every day this week I've talked a bit about how I met each of the participating authors and our our bookish friendship evolved from it. To be honest, I don't remember exactly how I came to be friends with Mrs. Stacey. I believe I saw The Shadow Prince for free one day and jumped on it.... Actually. Wait. I do remember. It was because of Jennifer L. Armentrout! JLA pimped this book one day and I jumped on it like white on rice, fell in love and haven't looked back. I remember that Stacey emailed me after my first review thanking me for taking the time to do it and from there we've really hit it off. It's been nearly a year since I plunged down the Stacey O'Neale rabbit hole and I am so glad I did! I love everything about the Mortal Enchantment series. As any of my regular readers will know, it is consistently ranked amongst my all time favorite YA fantasy series. Seriously, it's that good. On top of that, Stacey is about the coolest, most down to Earth author I've worked with. We chat about bookish awesome and sling book recs back and forth. I've read some awesome reads because of her suggestions (thanks again for Holly Black, I still owe you one for that). Lately we've bonded over our mutual love of all things Penny Dreadful. We're a bit obsessed. No shame. Haha! I cannot wait to meet Mrs. Stacey this week. Getting to know her has been a genuine pleasure and I consider her a great bookish friend of mine!

Let's learn a bit more about Stacey and her work:

Seriously one of my all time favorite series!

Exclusive UtopYA Interview with Stacey O'Neale

1. Tell us about your experience with UtopYA. What's your history with UtopYA and why do you attend?

This is actually the first time I'm attending. I wanted to go because it's a conference that's all about YA and NA. My series is YA, and I'm an avid YA reader, so it just made sense. :-)

2.What is your favorite Nashville attraction and why? If this is your first time attending UtopYA/visiting Nashville, what are you most excited to see?

I'm not sure. I really don't have anything else planned beyond the conference. I'm only going to be there for the weekend.

3.What makes UtopYA different from any other book convention/signing?

The focus on YA and NA. Also, that self-pub'd and small pub'd books are welcomed. The bigger conferences typically focus on traditional publishing. UtopYA seems to put everyone on the same level which is cool.

4. When not attending the conference, where will you be spending your week in Nashville?

No idea. LOL! I'll only be there for the weekend.

5. What are you reading right now?

I just finished reading FRIGID by Jennifer L. Armentrout. This year, I started reading NA books. This is my fourth book in the genre. So far, I'm really enjoying what I'm reading.

6. What are some of your favorite summertime reads? What recs do you have for your readers to check out this summer?

I don't really classify any of these as summer reads, but here are some of the latest books I've read and rated five stars:

THE COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES by Sarah Maas, THE CLOSER YOU COME by Gena Showalter, THE DARKEST PART OF THE FOREST by Holly Black, PUSHING THE LIMITS by Katie McGarry, and FRIGID by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

If you're looking for a book with a summertime feel, I would recommend CLARITY by Kim Harrington. It's set in a beach town.

7. What can we expect next from you?

I have an adult paranormal romance series coming out through Entangled's Covet line. It features three brothers who happen to be sexy aliens. The first book, UNDER HIS SKIN, is scheduled to come out in September 2015. ETERNAL SACRIFICE, the last book in my YA paranormal series, is scheduled to come out in October 2015. I'm currently writing an adult contemporary military romance series for my agent.

Quick, don't think!

-Favorite summertime beverage? Homemade Sweet Tea or Lemonade

-Favorite Ice Cream flavor? Cherry Vanilla

-Favorite part about summer? Steamed Crabs (it's a Maryland thing) ;-)

-Lounging on the beach or summer road trip? I live by the water and I'm someone who likes being relaxed at home. Not much for road trips. I guess I'm boring.

-Favorite 'song of the summer’? Right now, I'm loving: WORTH IT by Fifth Harmony https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m45DTO8sKcE

My Thoughts:

Okay guys, I just had to go back and reread my reviews of the last two installments of this series to get a feel fo rmy mindset while writing this. Allow me to reiterate this for you all: THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SERIES I HAVE READ ALL YEAR. Woah. I sincerely apologize, I didn't mean to lose my cool like that, it's just that THIS IS THE GREATEST SERIES EVER. Woah, woah, woah. I should probably calm down before I blow a gasket here. Did you guys catch that? Did you hear like I enjoy this series? Anyway. With all that being said, you can only imagine how pumped I was to read the latest installment in this incredible series. Thankfully, just like its' predecessors, Fragile Reign was absolutely astounding. Let's break this down.

Fraigle Reign picks up one week after Mortal Enchantment left off. Right in the middle of the elemental world going crazy. King Taron has been rescued, barely, but his court is in danger of falling apart without him. The fire court has so many problems they could use their own novel. Kalin and Rowan are... complicated, and if things don't settle down before too long, even the mortal world will be devastated by all the craziness that's happening in Avalon!  Got all that? Basically Stacey had some big shoes to fill. She sets us up for a huge store, and I have to say guys, she did not disappoint.

From the very first page, I was hooked. I'm a big fan of series where the author just jumps right in and does not feel the need to essentially recap everything that has happened up to this point. JK Rowling was awful about that with Harry Potter, you could always skip the first 50 pages and know you wouldn't miss a thing! Thankfully, Stacey O'Neale doesn't waste her time getting to the good parts. Right from chapter one we have Rowan putting out forest fires, and Marcus fighting his inner demons. Kalin and Ariel are facing their fair share of issues in keeping the Air court together while King Talon recooperates. This is not your average YA Fantasy.

When it comes to the characters, Stacey delivers more than she ever has before. We still have our amazing cast from the previous novels, as well as a few awesome additions. Rowan is still awesome, Kalin is finally get a hold of her life in Avalon, Ariel still loves Marcus, and Marcus, oh Marcus. My favorite character. Marcus really gets his time to shine in this book. I know I have mentioned this before, but I have no idea why I enjoy Marcus' character so much, but I do. I am seriously getting to the point where I want Stacey to write another novella or series just for Marcus. Thankfully his role in this novel is much larger than in previous ones. All you Marcus fans out there will not be disappointed. Also, he's on the cover, how cool! The most awesome edition to the cast, in my opinion was Sebastian, or 'Bash', as he is called. Bash plays a very important part to our story line and I was very impressed with his character. Recently, another book blogger and myself decided that Bash was one of our favorite parts of this novel. Seriously guys, I can't say anything else without spoiling something, but I know you will all enjoy the character development in this novel just as much as I did!

I won't say too much about the plot of this one because I do not want to give away any of the surprises or twists, but Fragile Reign had it going on! Everything flows so well in this novel. There is action, suspense, love, and one scene that was so freaking emotional, even I shed a tear: it's that great. If you real Mortal Enchantment and were even just a little impressed, this one will blow you completely out of the water, trust me on that one.

That emotional scene in mind, Stacey really takes the themes in this series and pushes them to their limits: betrayal, forgiveness, and responsibility are huge parts of this series. At one point I had to remind myself that these characters are still teenagers. It's so beautifully written that at times, I forget that on top of everything else going on in their lives, these characters have to deal with growing up. Emotions running wild, normal teenage problems, etc: can you imagine? Better them than me. In all seriousness though, they handle their problems with such maturity that you cannot help but to have massive amounts of respect for both the characters and our author, Stacey O'Neale.

One of my absolute favorite part about this series are the relationships that are present. Unlike other YA novels you read, Mortal Enchantment isn't about true love or relationships in that sense. Romance and love are definitely involved, but just the basic relationships between each and every character at the ground level are phenomenally written. Stacey O'Neale goes above and beyond to remind us all that all relationships are important. Even the friendship between two girls (Ariel and Kalin) or two guys (Rowan and Marcus) can prove to be just as imperative to our stories as a romantic relationship. Platonic friendships FTW! Seriously though. Stacey has mentioned before about how she has gotten flack for the closeness of her characters, particularly Marcus and Rowan. These characters are so close, they are truly brothers in every sense of the word. Where is it in the world and in literature that we stopped caring so much about all of our relationships and just about those that involve a romantic nature? I am not sure, but I hate it. I love reading about a true to life friendship, 'bromance' as you will. As a male reader myself, I find it to be extremely refreshing to see two males who can have such a tight bond and close friendship where the author isn't trying to imply something else. The same can be said of Kalin and Ariel. Everyone has friends, so why do books sometimes leave them out? I know that I, and many of you, would take a bullet for my best friend any day of the week. That kind of friendship doesn't develop overnight, why not embrace it? Kudos to you Stacey O'Neale for taking a stand against the masses and others in the literary world and showing us that relationships can about so much more than romance and sex.

The last thing I really want to touch on is the setting and new elements in this novel. While a few scenes take place in the mortal realm, unlike the previous installments, this novel takes place largely in Avalon, a decision I ultimately really agreed on. Avalon is described in much greater detail in this novel and we really get a sense of world building that helped to guild our story along rather beautifully. Stacey's words as written so beautifully as to paint the picture for the reader as though we are there! Stacey also brought a huge literary element into Fragile Reign that was merely hinted upon in previous installments: Arthurian literary devices. In this novel we learn that Excaliber is real, the Lady of the Lake was real, and that well... so were a whole lot of other things. Things in Avalon are about to get crazy!

My biggest upset is that all this was to build up to the final novel. We only have one more Mortal Enchantment book guys, just one... Expected out next summer! I am extremely heartbroken about this fact, but I believe Stacey is going to end this ride on a higer note that i would have ever imagined possible!

Still reading? I suppose I should wrap this up. After all that raving about how amazing this novel was, it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that I am granting Fragile Reign by Stacey O'Neale a 'completely-perfect-wouldn't-change-a-thing', 5+ star review. Yes, you read that correctly 5+ stars. That, my friends, is a whole lot of stars. If you have been on the fence about whether or not to pick up this series, I urge you folks, do not hesitate any longer. This series is truly a literary masterpiece and its' entire existence speaks volumes to the amazing originality and creative soul that is Stacey O'Neale. A perfect read for readers across all genres, ages, and genders: do not miss this.

Interview with Author Stacey O'Neale

Tell us a little about yourself. Why did you become an author? What makes Stacey O’Neale tick? Give us some insight into the life of an award-winning author!
I wish I had a cool response to this, but my life isn't all that exciting. I've been writing for six years now. I spent several years learning the craft of writing, while working as a book publicist for two different publishers. Most readers know me as Jennifer L. Armentrout's publicist. In 2014, I released THE SHADOW PRINCE and everything changed from there.

The Shadow Prince was your first book. In less than a year you have released two books in the series! What is your secret?
Ha! No secret, really. I write full-time without having another job. That certainly makes things a lot easier.  I write while my daughter is in school. I try to keep my weekends open for my family.

Your YA paranormal series is one of the “Elemental Fiction” sub-genre. If you could wield an element, what would it be and why?
I would choose Earth (or woodland as I call it) because they control anything that grows from the ground. I would want to live on acres of land and grow every fruit and vegetable that exists. If there was a zombie apocalypse, I would never starve because I could grow my own food. ;-p

What has been the most difficult part of writing this series thus far?
Having time for everything else besides the writing. Marketing is just as important as writing because if no one knows your books exist, you will never gain any readers. Plus, I like to be available for my readers. I enjoy that close connection. Sometimes it's hard to pry myself away from Twitter and Facebook.

What are your plans after Mortal Enchantment? Can you give us a glimpse of what else we can expect from Stacey O’Neale in the future?
I'm writing an adult science fiction romance series featuring sexy aliens. Think, a grown-up version of Roswell from the 90's. It's a lot of fun to bounce between adult and YA.

Family, friends, loyalty, and love are all huge defining themes in the Mortal Enchantment series. Do you have any one particular message you would like readers to get out of these books?
More than anything, I think the message is about inner strength. Kalin and Rowan are tested throughout this series and the odds tend to be against them. When they have persevered, it was because they believed in themselves. Most people don't realize how strong they are until they are tested. No matter what life throws at you, believe in yourself. Don't ever let anyone else define who you are.

Quick, don’t think!

Favorite color? Purple

Favorite beverage? Coffee

If you were an animal, what would you be? Since I'm so short, I think I'd like to be a giraffe. It would be nice to tower over people for once. ;-p

If you weren’t an award-winning amazing author, what would your dream occupation be?
I'd be a moderator  at Comic Con. The people that get to introduce panelists from movie and tv shows, then ask the cast questions. THAT would be cool!

Describe yourself in five words:
Quirky, Silly, Loyal, Determined, and Loud.

Thanks for the awesome questions, Ethan! J
Thanks for being so awesome, Mrs. Stacey :)

Excerpt from FRAGILE REIGN

Rowan

The caves of the eternal flame could only be reached through a pathway. The location was deep within the core of the planet. There was no way to get there from the surface. Once inside, only a fire elemental could withstand the heat. As we entered the caves, I remembered how easy it was to get lost down here. The tunnels go on for miles in every direction. Lucky for us, I knew the way. Mother brought me down here a few times, threatening to throw me into the fire. She told me the spirits of the dead fire elementals existed within the eternal flame.

The bulk of our army stayed behind. If something were to go wrong down here, I needed to make sure they still had the numbers to defend themselves. And by wrong, I meant the possibility that I might die the moment I enter the flames. The closer we got to the fire, the more my confidence was tested. My mother’s words echoed in my ears. When speaking about the eternal flame, she once said, “What can be made, can also be unmade.” Not the most comforting words to think about as I prepared to step inside the inferno.

I turned around, glancing at the army of hounds behind me. Some were staring at their hands as if they expected something to be there. Others closed their eyes, wearing expressions of enjoyment. They must have sensed the energy from the eternal flame, but likely had no idea what it was. Most fire elementals had never been down here. The portal has always been guarded. I spoke loud enough for everyone to hear me. “What you’re feeling is the presence of the flame. Your power will soon be the strongest it’s ever been.”

Ethan made his way to the front of the crowd. “Is that true for everyone?”

It was easy to see what he was implying. “Yes, this includes all of the rogue members of our court.” The crowd rumbled. “But I don’t plan on anyone having to fight today.”

Fragile Reign (Mortal Enchantment #2) by Stacey O'Neale Cover Reveal + GIVEAWAY

I am beyond thrilled to help reveal the cover for FRAGILE REIGN (Mortal Enchantment #2) by Stacey O'Neale! Check out the cover below, and let me know what you think in the comments. Then be sure to enter the giveaway for a chance to win a $100 Amazon or B&N gift card!

Details about the cover, from author Stacey O'Neale:

In case you're curious about the cover, the model represents Marcus. The background represents the woodland court and the caves at the bottom are where the members of the royal family live. I chose caves because the woodland court protects the forests of the world. I didn't think they would choose to cut down trees to make a castle, so the massive caves worked out nicely. If you zoom in, you can see where the doors and windows are cut out. The inside is very lavish. If you read FRAGILE REIGN, you'll learn all about it.
