For the Heart of Dragons (The Dragons of Eternity #3) by Julie Wetzel Blog Tour (Excerpt + Giveaway)

Crimson Tree Publishing presents: For the Heart of Dragons, the third installment in Julie Wetzel's Dragons of Eternity Series.

Disconnection is a very serious issue for dragons that can leave them stuck in one form or another, but it’s a condition that usually comes on slowly and rarely catches anyone by surprise. No one knows this better the Kara Rose, Eternity’s leading specialist in the treatment of this condition. So when the head of Eternity demands her presence for an emergency, she can’t imagine what he could want. She is, after all, only a therapist.

As a top mage with Eternity, Noah Dove has worked with dragons for most of his life, so he is used to their odd quirks and physical needs. When a dark beauty shows up to disrupt the king’s celebrations, he agrees to go with her to keep the peace. When Noah is unable to protect the woman from the group killing dragons, he’s left with her last request—to save her dragon. It would normally be an impossible task, but with a bit of magic and some help from the dragon, Noah forms the one thing that can transfer a dragon from one person to another—a Heart Stone.

Now the dragon is loose and out of control… and the only person who can help is Kara. With Noah’s consciousness locked away beyond her reach, she must somehow find a way to soothe the dragon and connect two halves that were never a whole. The task is daunting and will push her knowledge—and personal boundaries—to their limit and beyond.

Excerpt:

Kara started off, and Mac fell into step next to her, holding the umbrella between them. “So…” she shot the man a sidelong look, “what’s the emergency?”

The happy look on Mac’s face dropped, leaving a level of seriousness that worried Kara. “I think it’s best if you talk to Daniel about that.”

Concerned by his words, Kara gave him a surprised look before letting the conversation drop and turning her attention back to where they were going. What could this emergency be? She was a counselor that specialized in a very narrow field of mental health. Give her a disconnected dragon, and she could work wonders. Give her anything else, and she was almost as clueless as a monkey doing math.

Kara turned possible scenarios over in her mind as Mac led her through the halls of the main office. Even though it had been a while since she’d been there, she knew her way around pretty well. She paused for a heartbeat when Mac passed up the turn leading to Daniel’s office and headed down the hall to the holding cells. Her brow creased in confusion when they came upon a group of men standing outside one of the cells.

It wasn’t uncommon to see groups of soldiers standing around waiting on something, but these looked like they had been on the losing end of some epic battle. They were rumpled and torn up. A few sported bleeding bites, and one was holding a bag of ice to what looked to be a burn. The group huddled together, peeking through a small window in a door.

Mac stopped a few paces back from them and held out his hand, ushering Kara on.

Kara glanced at him before walking past and up to the men. Each one stepped back and let her closer to the small window. The looks on their faces frightened her. She turned towards the glass, not knowing if she wanted to see what was inside. Gathering her courage, she stepped up and looked through the window.

The room beyond was fairly small. Nothing really remarkable about it. Just a simple holding cell with a concrete bed on one side and a metal toilet on the other. What was remarkable was the condition it was in. The metal toilet had been ripped from the floor, and water sprayed out over the torn-up shreds of what was left of the pad that had been on the bench. There were long claw marks down the walls. They hadn’t really damaged the brick walls, but the paint job was toasted. And speaking of toasted, there were huge soot stains on the walls where something had tried to set them on fire. Right in the middle of the whole mess was the culprit. A small, black dragon, no larger than a dog. It stared at the door as if it were daring someone to open it. As Kara met its eyes, a trickle of smoke rolled out of the beast’s nose, and it growled. The thing launched itself at the window.

Kara jumped back as the creature slammed into the heavy glass. Hands of the men around her caught her before she could hit the ground again. As she regained her balance, she listened to the dragon terrorize the cell. Never in her time as a counselor had she seen a dragon lose it like that. A sinking feeling settled into the pit of her stomach as she stared at the door to the cell. Is this the reason Daniel called?

What do you do when a dragon crash-lands in your backyard?

That’s the question Terra’s faced with when one of these creatures plows down into her cornfield. Giving him up just doesn’t seem right… at least until she knows the truth of who he is.

Alex has forgotten a thing or two—his name being one of them—but he knows there is something important that he needs to remember, if he could just get his battered brain to work properly. A little rest might help, but there’s no time for that when the bullets start flying.

Now, he has to follow the few clues he has to discover who he is, and why people are trying to kill him. But that’s the easy part. The hard part will be keeping his hands off the lovely lady helping him.

For the Memory of Dragons (Dragons of Eternity #2) by Julie Wetzel Review

Hey Readers! Ethan here on this Thursday to bring you another review. This time, I'm sharing my thoughts on the newest installment of one of my favorite fantasy series. This series really changed my bookish life when it comes to this genre and it continues to blow me away with each passing read. What am I raving about? For the Memory of Dragons by the incredible Julie Wetzel. Here's a bit about the novel and our author before we get to my thoughts:

What do you do when a dragon crash-lands in your backyard?

That’s the question Terra’s faced with when one of these creatures plows down into her cornfield. Should she help out the hunk of a man the dragon turns into, or turn him over to the trigger-happy ‘authorities’ that have come looking for him? The deciding factor—he has no memory.

My Thoughts:

Earlier this summer, I threw my hat into the ring with 'I am not a fan of dragons'. Julie Wetzel introduced me to Accidental Wings and I thought 'Okay fine, maybe she made me like them once, but it won't happen again'. A few months later, Wetzel hit me with Castle and I thought 'surely it won't happen again', yet for a second time, her dragons blew me away. When Julie handed me the chance to try her dragons for a third time, I didn't even hesitate to jump at the chance. Julie Wetzel has changed my bookish ways, maybe I actually am a dragon person?!

It isn't often I love every novel in a series, but each time Wetzel puts pen to paper, my bookish heart soars with delight. For the Memory of Dragons most definitely did not disappoint!

In true One Guy's Guide to Good Reads fashion, I'd like to get my negative thoughts out of the way first. I only have one, thankfully. When it comes to a great read, I love losing myself within the pages of a story, escaping the realities of life for a while. While Wetzel is more than able to satisfy in that department, I will admit that this novel was far shorter than I would have liked. Clocking in at just shy of 130 pages, I knocked this out very quickly. With novels of this genre, I have always come to expect a much greater length. Wetzel tells a full, thrilling story within these pages, but I will admit I would have loved to see a much longer story in this world. While every story in this series is a shorter, quicker read, I still thoroughly enjoy and consider them each to be amazing. This is just something that I, personally, would like to see changed in future installments.

Now enough of that, let's rave!

While I've loved every installment of this series thus far, Alex and Terra's story may be my favorite yet! When a dragon crash lands in the field behind her farmhouse, Terra's life is changed in more ways than one. From mythical beast to naked man, Terra must take this confused stranger under her wing to keep him safe. But from what? When Alex awakes with no memory, he must piece the clues together to save himself and the rest of the his people from harm.

Full of action, quick wit, and a few steamy scenes, Wetzel packs a punch with this quick read. Every page was jam packed with fun and excitement, with more twists and turns than you'd ever expect. Crafted carefully with new settings, new characters, and new insight to the mythical world of dragons, Memory really stands out in the crowd.

With cameo appearances from some of our former characters, Wetzel ties in this third installment perfectly within her world. While Alex's character is, admittedly, much like other dragons we've read about, I believe it was Terra who really stood out in this novel. She's intelligent, strong willed, and street-savvy. Her character development, and surprise ending, really rooted the story with a great amount of emotion and reality that I was really glad to see.

The setting and world that Wetzel has crafted with this series is incredible. From ancient times to modern day, the world of Dragons and their human shifters is definitely unique and memorable. Much like other worlds with their feet in our realm, Wetzel has done a perfect job of altering the fabric of reality to let the fantasy stream through into our own world. With specifics and magic that aren't bogged down with rules, history, or cultures, Wetzel is able to better tell her story and make it enjoyable to even the most casual of readers. A true testament to the talent of her writing, Wetzel has far surpassed my expectations for the genre!

With the next novel in this series (titled For the Heart of Dragons) slated for release right around the corner, I have no doubt that Wetzel will continue to exceed my every expectation and confirm my beliefs that my views on high fantasy are changing. Let that be a lesson to all hesitant readers: one great series can, indeed, make a difference!

With all of this being said, it should come as absolutely no surprise that I am granting For the Memory of Dragons a well-deserved 5-star review! Julie Wetzel has yet to disappoint me, and I can't wait to see what comes next. I highly recommend this read to all lovers of high fantasy, paranormal, and romance novels, though be advised of the novels adult content, violence, and language. Don't miss out, add this to your TBR today!
