Guest Post from Sherry Ficklin (Dream Cast)

Hello Followers of One Guy’s Guide To Good Reads! Thanks for having me out today to celebrate the release of the first book in my new #HACKER series, Playing With Fire! Ethan has challenged me to cast my own book-movie. I gotta say, this is tough. I know that what they look like in my head will never be the same as what they look like in yours, but we are gonna give it a crack! If you have any suggestions, feel free to drop your dream cast in the comments below!

Here we go.

First up, Farris, my MC and hacker girl. She has a boldness that I find hard to really express, so I picked Adelaide Kane (Reign, Teen Wolf) as my star.

Adalaide Kane as Farris
And as her besties, the adorable goth couple Kayla and Derek, Malese Jow (The Vampire Diaries) and Devon Bostick (The 100).

Malese Jow as Kayla
Devon Bostick as Derek

Then, for my main guys, I went with Cody Christian (Teen Wolf) as Oliver:

Cody Christian as Oliver

And Ryan Kelley (Teen Wolf, Ben 10) as Reid:

Ryan Kelley as Reid

(I know he’s a little old for the part, but in my head he’s still Ben 10, so him at that age is what I’m thinking.)

And last but not least, Oliver’s friend Cole, aka Casey Deidrick (Eye Candy):

Casey Deidrick as Cole

So that’s my cast. They are much more fun to look at than the real life counterparts of my LAST book series! ;) I hope you check out Playing with Fire and book 2, In Too Deep is now available for pre-order and is releasing Nov 30th!

The Professor Woos the Witch (Nocturne Falls #4) by Kristen Painter Review

Hello, and Happy Wednesday! Ethan here yet again to share my thoughts on yet another incredible read from Kristen Painter and the Nocturne Falls series. I have absolutely flown through this series and have yet to read something that didn't leave me reeling for more. As of now, I'm all caught up and anxiously awaiting the next installment in the series! But until then I have one more novel to share my thoughts on. This time on the chopping block? The Professor Woos the Witch, book four in Painter's Nocturne Falls series. Here's a bit about the novel and our author before we get to my thoughts:

Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town where Halloween is celebrated 365 days a year. The tourists think it's all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better. Living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs and all.

Pandora Williams is Nocturne Falls’ most successful real estate agent. And least successful witch. Her magic never has the intended outcome, but she’s learned to live with that. Mostly. Yes, it sucks, but what can she do? Then a hot new neighbor shows up and suddenly her magic works. Very cool, but very suspect. Especially since he’s a total non-believer.

Cole Van Zant likes practicality and absolutes. Things he can see and touch. So not magic. But when his teenage daughter insists she’s a witch—and they’re now living in a town that celebrates Halloween every day—he needs help. Of the witchy variety. Thankfully, his sexy neighbor buys into all that hocus pocus.

Enlisting her help seems like a great idea until spending time together reveals a supernatural surprise about who Cole really is. A secret even he didn’t know. Could Pandora and Cole really be meant for one another or is their attraction too much to believe?

My Thoughts:

Just in time for the Halloween season, I am so excited to be reviewing the latest installment in one of my absolutely favorite paranormal series of all! A few months ago, I was introduced to Kristen Painter with the release of The Vampire’s Mail Order Bride, I’ll admit that at first I was a little turned off by the title and synopsis, but after devouring that first story, I haven’t looked back. I’ve read each passing installment and haven’t disliked a single one yet. From vampires, to werewolves, to gargoyles, fae, and now witches, Nocturne Falls hosts all the Halloween fun day after day. After crafting so many amazing tales already, could Painter live up to the hype with book four?

Of course she did.

The Professor Woos the Witch may be my favorite installment yet!

Anyone who knows of my love of paranormal knows that witches are one of my favorites. There aren’t many novels pertaining to witchcraft that I haven’t loved in some way, shape, or capacity and of course this one was no exception.

Following the story of Nocturne Falls realtor Pandora Williams, Painter weaves her most fun story yet. When faulty witch Pandora Williams meets Nocturne Falls’ newest family, her life is turned on its’ head when she discovers her newfound attraction to college professor Cole Van Zant. After Cole and his daughter Kaley inherit a mansion in Nocturne Falls, they pick up shop and head South. With Kaley’s constant insistence she’s a witch, she’ll need help from the locals to guide her through her upbringing, but with a father as a non-believer, it’s going to take a lot more than a little magic to prove to Cole that Nocturne Falls is what it claims to be.

Watching Pandora and Cole’s relationship develop was one of the greatest romances I have read in a paranormal story. It was believable and was definitely not an insta-love story in any capacity. In true Nocturne Falls fashion, it talks a lot of twists and turns for our MCs to find their happily ever afters. After Cole discovers a huge family secret (with the help of his ghostly ancestor in the attic), the entire story is turned on its’ head where we discover a whole new race of paranormals to introduce to Painter’s beautifully crafted world.

I couldn’t set this story down for even a moment and ended up reading the entire thing in one sitting. I don’t think I could have been more impressed if I tried. I love how Painter is able to intertwine her paranormal world with our human one so seamlessly, almost as though Nocturne Falls really exists. I’m still waiting for my invitation to join the fun.

In this fourth installment, we see a return to Nocturne Falls for the entirely of the story after many changes in setting in book three. It was a much appreciated return for this reader who absolutely cannot get enough of the Nocturne Falls community that Painter has created. All of our favorite places are here from Howlers, to the sherrif’s office, Hugh Ellingham’s estate, the fountains, the jewelers, and so much more. Fans of the series will love the cameo appearances by many of our former heroes as we catch up with what they’ve been up to since we last said goodbye.

I’m not sure how many installments Painter is planning in the Nocturne Falls series, but I can see these going on for years to come! Keep them coming Kristen, we’re loving each and every installment!

One of the greatest things about this series for me is their ‘fun’ factor. These stories are quick, fast-paced, easy reads. Nothing too deep to bog you down with feels, and just enough excitement to remind you why you fell in love with reading in the first place. The romance is very PG-13 and nothing is explicit. Most of the romance occurs off-page so you can rest assured that this read won’t leave you uncomfortable in any fashion. I wish more writers would take a page out of Painter’s book and realize that a paranormal romance doesn’t have to be erotica to be amazing!

As you can clearly see, I thoroughly enjoyed this fourth installment to the Nocturne Falls series from the first sentence all the way to the final chapter. I absolutely cannot wait for more. It should come as no surprise that I am granting The Professor Woos the Witch a near-perfect 5-star review. I highly recommend this series to readers of romance, paranormal, supernatural, and fiction novels. Don’t miss your chance to catch up on this absolutely incredible series just in time for the Halloween season! Add this one to your TBR today!

Ignited (Donovan Circus #4) by Liz Long Review

Hey readers! Ethan here with yet another review for you guys. This time, I am reviewing the fourth installment to one of my absolute all-time favorite series. I have been raving about this series for well over a year now so I know you guys have heard all about it. I'm so ridiculously pumped to be sharing my thoughts on this one with you all today. On the chopping block? Ignited, the fourth novel in the acclaimed Donovan Circus series by the amazing Liz Long. Before we get to my thoughts, here's a bit about the novel about our author:

"Maybe I had to accept that the Donovan Circus no longer felt like home."

Lucy might've beaten Alex the Chameleon, but the cost of his defeat was too much to bear. After losing a beloved member, Sheffield Donovan temporarily disbands the show. Abandoned by the ringmaster and her friends, Lucy is left to pick up the pieces of their ruined circus - and defend it against those waiting for the opportunity to strike. During one of these attempts, Lucy learns of Augustus Rivers, the leader of his so-called gifted mafia.

When Lucy is offered a chance to infiltrate the Rivers' household, she jumps at the opportunity to seek vengeance on the mastermind. Augustus instead surprises everyone by proposing that the powerful female Firestarter work for him. It's everything the Donovan Circus isn't, an offer Lucy finds more enticing than she ever expected.

With the Donovan Circus in shambles and the gifted world on the cusp of war, can Lucy Sullivan figure out who she's meant to be? Or will her fire destroy everything they've built?

My Thoughts:

It isn’t often in the life of a bibliophile that we come across an author who forever changes our lives. Sure we may read 5 books a week and rave about them every waking moment, but how often do we as readers come across a novel or series that resonates with us deeply that it forever changes your bookish life? Not often. Last summer, I was whisked about to the Donovan Circus, I entered the center ring, and to this day I have never looked back. Four incredible novels later, I am so excited to still share the excitement that I felt on that fateful day I read Liz Long’s opening lines.

With so much Donovan Circus under her belt, could Ignited really live up to the hype?

Yes. So much yes.

I’ll just go ahead and say that Ignited has well surpassed the others and has rooted itself as the strongest novel in the series. Long’s writing has definitely improved with each passing installment.

When it comes to the plot of Ignited, I was a little leery, but it really panned out in a huge way. Lucy is once again thrown into the line of fire when she joins forces with Gifted-Mobster Augustus Rivers, but in her attempt to play the dangerous double agent, Lucy discovers the dark side may not be all she feared. In this incredible installment of the series, Lucy must decide where her true alliances lie. Has Sheffield and his rag-tag bunch of ‘freaks’ been completely honest with Lucy, or is there a flipside to the impending war she’s fought so hard to control? Friendships will be tested, alliances will wane, and Lucy will truly have to come into her own if she’s going to make it out of this journey alive.

I’m going to stay away from talking too much about the plot as with intricacies Liz has created with this one, massive spoilers would be abound. I will say that I’ve deemed Donovan Circus book four as ‘The Dark Lucy Saga’ as we truly get to discover an entirely new side of Lucy in this novel. A side that I’ve been hoping for since we first met her in book one. As anyone who has read the series will well know, Lucy has undergone extreme change and emotional distress since joining with Donovan and the gang. Ignited finally sees Lucy coming to terms with the events of the past and her journey to overcome the darkness is truly an emotional tale.

I think my favorite part about this entire series is the complete ensemble cast. Long has done an incredible job of introducing a cast of dozens of characters while making them memorable, but not overbearing. Each character plays an important role to the series, but never steals the spotlight away from the mail conflict. Ignited introduces us to a handful of new characters that really come into their own in this story and will be of vital important throughout the remainder of the series. Donovan Circus fans rest assured that our favorites are still in tow with a lot of story to tell in Ignited. We also see the much anticipated return of Gabriel and a huge shift in the personal love lives of Lucy and Keegan. The cards have been dealt, and Donovan Circus will never be the same as they pick up the pieces in the aftermath of Hunted.

As I mentioned previously, Ignited is by-far the most emotional installment of Donovan Circus so far, Long really pulled out all the stops. Long hits on a plethora of important themes such as life and death, forgiveness, struggling with truth, trust, love, loss, and trusting your instincts in a constant battle for Lucy to decipher the difference between right and wrong in a life that’s been completely unfair to her at times. Any reader will thoroughly enjoy to this installment and can easily related to the hardships faced by Lucy on multiple levels.

One of the most important things about this series has always been the setting. Long took strides in this installment to bring the story back to its’ circus roots. The excitement, the light hearted fun, and the thrill of the traveling show are gone. Replaced by darkness, mourning, fear, and tension. It’s not the same circus we entered four novels ago, but the setting is back and better than ever. If I had to describe Ignited to someone who had never read the series, I’d much relate it to a 70's spy film with a modern day 'James-Bond-Meets-the-X-Men' feel. I think readers will be pleasantly surprised by the direction Long has taken with this fourth installment.

An electrifying original read, Liz Long has crafted her most enthralling and spectacular novel yet, Ignited is not to be missed!

With all of this being said, it should come as absolutely no surprise to any reader that I am granting Ignited by Liz Long a near-perfect 5-star review. I couldn’t be any more proud to call myself a fan of this series if I tried. Huge kudos to Long for knocking this fourth installment out of the park! I highly recommend this series to any fans of urban fantasy, paranormal, and upper YA/New Adult readers. Don’t miss your chance to add this series to your TBR today!

Confessions of a Recent Convert

Hey there blog hoppers. Welcome to my stop on the Zombie Crawl Blog Party! Today I'm going to be sharing my brief story as a recent convert to the zombie trope. Hope you enjoy!

I'll be honest with you readers, Ethan here is not really a zombie fan. *gasp* I know, I know. Hard to believe. I've never seen an episode of The Walking Dead, most horror movies bore me to tears, and until about a two years ago, I'd never so much as touched a zombie novel. So what am I doing here? Well, it just so happens that the works of a few pretty awesome people have converted me over full fledged to where I maybe, just kind of really freaking enjoy the trope now. So what changed? Let's take a walk through my top five favorite zombies ever.

So let's go back to my childhood. Yes, I'm pretty young, I know. In my house, we were big Scooby-Doo fans. Couldn't get enough. I watched all the movies, TV shows, and all. Let's be honest, some of it was pretty scary for a cartoon. None more so than the 1998 hit Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island. Zombies, pirates, were-cats, voodoo, and the Louisiana bayou all rolled into one cartoon? Uh yeah, scary as hell. To this day it remains one of my all time favorite cartoon films. Those zombies were seriously legit. That and I tend to get the "It's Terror Time Again" song stuck in my head whenever I think of zombies. If you've never seen this one, you're really missing out.

So picking up from the screen side of things, I've recently took the plunge into trying to enjoy some television zombies. No, it's not TWD, but one other that really appealed to my love of crime shows and forensics: iZombie. Adapted from the wildly popular comic series, this new CW series has really taken me by storm, I seriously cannot get enough. It's a bit different than your average zombie series, but I'm thoroughly impressed. The first season is now in Netflix, be sure to check it out.

So honestly, that's about it when it comes to the visualized zombies that I can tolerate. Thankfully, there have been some absolutely incredible zombie book series that have really appealed to my inner bookworm. I've read about a dozen at this point, but these three are hands-down my favorite. Let's check them out!

First would have to be the novel that first introduced me to literary zombies, Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion. I know there's a lot of controversy around this one and it's inclusion in true zombie lore, but seriously as a newbie who was really hesitant about zombies in the first place, it was the perfect introduction for me. I've read these books so many times now. They're great!

Second would be The World Without End series by the incredible Nazarea Andrews. Right after I began my journey in the bookish world, I came across Andrews and this series. It's a New Adult zombie series that is full of horror, drama, and steam. I've been raving about this series for a long time now and all my bookish friends know how much Ren and Finn appealed to me. This four book series has now ended, but Andrews is beginning a spin-off series starting next year. Definitely worth adding to your TBR!

Finally we've got what would have to be my number one all-time favorite zombie anything ever. The absolutely amazing Rachel Auke's Deadland Saga. Oh holy hell you guys. On my list of all-time favorite book series, this one definitely is close to the top. I have never felt the wide spectrum of emotions I felt when I devoured this series. From absolute horror to heartbreaking emotion, it was one ride I'm not sure I'll ever be able to forget. I'm not an emotional reader but there were times when this series had me in tears. Nothing is sacred in the apocalypse and Aukes definitely knows it. Spinning the trilogy off as a retelling of Dante Alighieri's classic Dante's Inferno, Aukes weaves together the perfect series of survival and redemption in a shattering world. It's the only series I've seen that really closely follows the zombie apocalypse from the very beginning. I couldn't recommend this series any more if I tried.

As you guys can see, while I may not be a huge zombie fan, I've got a few zom-favories under my cap. Every time I read another zombie series it changes my bookish mind towards the zombie trope. While I don't believe it'll ever become my favorite, I think it's definitely going to be something I see becoming more and more prominent in my future! What about you guys? Fan of the films? The books? Let me know what you think in the comments below! To share some of my favorites with you all, I'm giving away box set copies of both Andrews and Aukes series below. Don't miss it!
