Heather Lyons has always had a thing for words—she’s been writing stories since she was a kid. In addition to writing, she’s also been an archaeologist and a teacher. Heather is a rabid music fan, as evidenced by her (mostly) music-centric blog, and she’s married to an even larger music snob. They’re happily raising three kids who are mini music fiends who love to read and be read to.

Drama's
not safe and it's not pretty and it's not kind. People expect the basic
template of . . . drama where there might be naughty villains, but everyone
ends up having a nice cup of tea. You've got to do big moral choices and show
the terrible things people do in terrible situations. Drama is failing if it
doesn't do that.
Once
upon a time, villains were easy to spot. They were ugly (or coolly beautiful),
wore black, and either smirked or scowled approximately one hundred percent of
the time. The men often had moustaches they could twirl (because, c’mon,
twirling mustaches is WAY evil) and the women were just so dang haughty that
they couldn’t be anything OTHER than villainous.
But
villains are not so cut and dry—nor should they be so. Villains are necessary
for so many books, because, let’s face it, the stories we love would be
terribly boring without them. If not for antagonists, who would be there to
help push our protagonists toward growth and discovery? If not for villains,
how could heroes step up to the plate and prove their worth? If not for
conflict, happy endings would not feel quite as sweet and easy to embrace.
Villains—those
nefarious, conflicted, complex creatures—allow us glimpses into morality.
A good
villain will force you to wonder—and worry—about what’s going on in their
heads. Do they think they’re doing the
right thing? Or do they know what they’re doing is wrong? What is their end
game? Do they even have one? Are they actual villains—or anti-heroes? Do they
enjoy what they’re doing?
My favorite kinds of villains take their sweet time
answering these kinds of questions. I like being conflicted. I like worrying
about their motives. I like wondering if I’ve actually identified all the
villains or if I’m missing something—a clue, perhaps, an author left behind.
And if I’m lucky, you’ll be wondering all these same things when you’re reading
my latest book The Collectors’ Society.
Because there is a villain there—many, actually—and none have motives as clear
as what you initially may think they might be.

My favorite "fairy tale" is a hard one to judge, but I do have a favorite "fairy tale" character: Baba Yaga from Russian Lore. Russian fairy tales are way more interesting than some of their western European counterparts!
