Excerpt from Chasing Daybreak by Ranae Glass:

“You were arrested for what?” I asked again in disbelief.
Shane sighed on the other end of the line. “Loitering. Are you gonna come get me or not?”
Part of me wanted to ask why he didn’t just call his rich vamp girlfriend or soon to be boss-man to bail him out, but I held back. Truth was, in some sick, co-dependent, Dr. Phil kind of way, I was glad he’d called me.
“Keep your panties on, I’m on my way. Just relax and try not to eat anybody,” I quipped.
In the background I could hear a male voice tell Shane his time was up.
“Isabel, just hurry, okay?” Nervous tension was thick in his voice.
I quickly put in a call to Craig Gentry, a bail bondsman who’d done some work for my dad in the past, and made a beeline for the precinct.
Shane was sitting on a wooden bench just outside the magistrate’s office, a young, nervous-looking officer standing behind him with a massive shotgun probably loaded with wooden pellets. Not fatal to vamps unless it took out the heart, but certainly enough to do some serious damage.
The kid couldn’t have been more than twenty-one, and judging by his general pallor and sweaty forehead, Shane was probably the first vamp he’d ever seen, much less been tasked to guard. Seeing me walk in, Shane slumped just a fraction, visibly relaxing. It was a very human gesture. One of the many things I’d miss about him when he grew into his new life.
I nodded, warning him with my eyes not to make any sudden movements that might spook the newbie.
Reggie was waiting for me at the desk, chatting with Matilda, the night desk officer. He’d obviously been called in from home. Still wearing his Superman pajama pants and gray sweatshirt, he cradled a cup of coffee with one hand and smoothed down his unruly bed head with the other.
“Reggie,” I called, turning his attention to me.
“Ah, Isabel. Good to see you.”
“Same here.” I thumbed behind me. “Mind sending Skippy over there to get some coffee or something before he accidentally shoots my partner?”
Reggie laughed, leaned forward and called over. “Hey Weston, I got it from here.”
The kid looked like he might argue, then thought better of it and closed his mouth, walking away backwards, watching the back of Shane’s head the whole way.
“Thanks. So what happened?”
“Looks like Shane was over at the Quick Mart down the road from your place about midnight. Clerk thought he was acting ‘suspicious,’ so he called in the black and whites. Shane gave them some lip and they moved to detain him when he flashed fang.”
“Did he put up any resistance?” I asked, knowing as soon as the words were out of my mouth that it was a stupid question. If he’d resisted either he, or more likely they, would be in body bags.
Reggie chuckled. “Nah. But he gave Weston a good scare.”
“The store owner pressing charges?”
“I doubt it. He was pretty pissed to get called in the middle of the night and dragged down here. He and Detective Richards are looking over the security footage right now. If the clerk jumped the gun, then most likely Shane’ll be free to go.”
I turned and looked over my shoulder at Shane who sat there wearing his best innocent face, then turned back to the desk.
“Hey, Reggie, has anyone taken mug shots yet?”
“No. If he’s cut loose there’ll be no need to book him.” His eyebrow shot up as he noticed the wide up-to-no-good grin spreading across my face.
“Cause the thing is, I could really use some photos for the Christmas cards.” I smiled.
Finally catching on, he erupted with laughter.
“Why not? You go break the bad news to Shane. I’ll meet you in the back.” He pointed over his shoulder to the double doors and the magistrate’s office beyond.
I walked over to the bench where Shane sat. “Bad news, the owner might be pressing charges. Reggie said you have to go get your mug shot and fingerprints taken. But he said I could go with you at least.”
Shane stared at me, his mask of innocence morphing into sheer panic, then fading to mild boredom and resignation.
“Fine,” he huffed.
The clink of snapping metal echoed in the nearly empty hallway as he got to his feet before remembering he was handcuffed to the bench. He held up his hands. The links between the cuffs were broken in half. Shane shrugged and I beckoned for him to follow me down the hall.
By the time Joyce, the lady in charge of taking mug shots, was finished Shane knew he’d been set up. Reggie and I were rolling with laughter. At first Shane was confused, but then he looked at the nameplate Reggie had made for him and saw that it read, ‘Merry Christmas from Stone Private Investigations.’

The Last Orphans by N.W. Harris Review

Hey readers, Happy Thursday! Most of you are gearing up for a weekend full of awesome! I hope you all have awesome plans! Before you get down to celebrating, I have a review to share with you all. I picked up this read last night, for FREE off of B&N after checking it out for a very long time. Well, once I started I knew it was game over. I devoured the entire novel in just a couple of sittings. Definitely one of the most unique reads I have checked out in a long time. What are we raving about? The Last Orphans by Neil Harris. Here's a bit about the book and our author:

One horrifying day will change the life of sixteen-year-old Shane Tucker and every other kid in the world.

In a span of mere hours, the entire adult population is decimated, leaving their children behind to fend for themselves and deal with the horrific aftermath of the freak occurrence. As one of the newly made elders in his small town, Shane finds himself taking on the role of caretaker for a large group of juvenile survivors. One who just happens to be Kelly Douglas—an out-of-his-league classmate—who, on any other day, would have never given Shane a second glance.

Together, they begin their quest to find out why all of the adults were slaughtered. What they find is even more horrifying than anything they could have expected—the annihilation of the adults was only the beginning. Shane and his friends are not the unlucky survivors left to inherit this new, messed-up planet. No, they are its next victims. There is an unknown power out there, and it won’t stop until every person in the world is dead.

A spine-tingling adventure that will have you gasping for breath all the way until the last page, The Last Orphans is the first book in an all-new apocalyptic series.

My Thoughts:

I oftentimes find myself bouncing from genre to genre, looking for the next spark in my list of 'great reads'. It's been a pretty bumpy road lately. For every great book I review, I turned down a handful, it seems. For months now, I have stared at the cover of the novel and reread the synopsis thinking 'one day I'll check it out'. Well folks, today was that day. Last night before bed I said to myself 'well, I'll just read a chapter and see what I think". 75 pages and an hour later, I was hooked. So much for sleep!

From there my whole day was spend itching to get off work so I could rush home and finish this read. HOLY SMOKES PEOPLE. Seriously, I couldn't step away. Could not step away. Absolutely incredible.

The only negative critique that I have of this novel is its' length. My B&N version clocked in at only 207 pages. I flew through this read. Which is fine, but I would have loved to see a longer version of this novel. I am sure that Harris has a whole folder on his computer somewhere of 'deleted scenes' from Orphans and I'll tell you what, I need to see them!

Also, a warning to some of you. This book does get a bit graphic as it deals with many gruesome deaths and adult situations.

As you guys know, here at One Guy's Guide to Good Reads, I review a bit of everything from a plethora of authors. One side of the literary community that I always fall short on is male authors. In this female dominated community, it's hard to find a male author who is not only writing, but producing high quality works. On this blog, I've only review a handful in a years' time. I am beyond honored to host a review for Harris here today.

To say Harris' writing style is impressive, would be an insult to this incredible novel. Words can't hardly describe it. I know now after glancing at multiple other reviews of this novel that I am not the only one that thought this, but Harris has a huge knack for horror writing. I would definitely dub him one of the 'Stephen Kings of YA'. I do not know that a YA book have ever given me chills the way that this story did. The description that Harris is able to put into his settings with so little words are incredible. Harris is definitely one of those authors where 'less is more'. It was incredible how his writing was able to evoke such images in my imagination. This entire story was like a motion picture played in my mind. Absolutely phenomenal.

When it comes to the plot line, I won't say that this idea is completely unheard of. What I will say is that Harris definitely takes this and makes it his own. A world without adults may seem like a great time, but Harris shows us all how truly terrifying it could be. No rhyme, rule, or reason, can a group of children really come together to survive? The gripping emotions brought forth from this plot line left me beyond words. How do you fit this much story into a mere 200 pages? I will say that for some reason I was constantly comparing this novel to The Maze Runner, except.... much better. I wasn't a huge fan of the MR trilogy, but I loved the tone that James Dashner set. I believe that Harris also does an absolutely incredible job of showcasing that the YA genre can compete for those coveted horror-readers.

The characters in this novel were awesome. There wasn't any beating around the bush. They were blunt, brash, and would grow from children to strong willed adults in a very short period of time. I was able to relate with so many of these characters that it made each and every hardship tear at my heartstrings. Kudos to Harris for this incredible character development!

Survival, loyalty, and maturity are all huge themes in this novel. I am sure that this will only expand as the series continues, but these these are interesting on so many levels. To be honest, I'm not sure that this same novel would necessarily work if it were flipped on its' head and all the children died and left the adults to fend for themselves, the loss of innocence and the aging of a child are both heartbreaking and pivotal moments in life and Harris captures those moments perfectly. I cannot wait to see what the next novel holds for our characters.

As you guys can clearly see, I was a huge fan of this novel. Without a doubt one of the best YA I have read all year. I am granting The Last Orphans by N.W. Harris a well-deserved 5-star review. I was hooked from page one and was not disappointed in the least. You have definitely gained a huge fan here Mr. Harris. I cannot wait to follow your latest works! Here's to many, many more successful stories! The Last Orphans is a MUST READ for fans of horror, sci-fi, and any YA, especially those looking for 'something different'. I know you will not be disappointed!

Alright readers, that's all I have for you on the topic of The Last Orphans by N.W. Harris! What do you think? Sound like your kind of read? I loved every second of it. I only wish it were longer. An Autumn to Remember by Joy Galloway Review

Hey readers. Happy Sunday! Hope you guys are all staying warm. I'm spending my weekend indoors catching up on some reads. Things have been more than a little crazy over on my end. Between work, my internship, and overall life stresses, I haven't had much time for blogging lately. I'm doing my best to rectify that, but I appreciate all your patience with me while I work through it all! Today I am going to be sharing my thoughts on a recent review request that I got. It's a little off from my normal read, but I am excited to share my thoughts. What are we talking about? An Autumn to Remember, the debut novel by Joy Galloway! Before we get to my thoughts, here's a bit about the novel:

Is it possible to have all you desire and hope for?

Despite their different social classes, Jamie Collins and Chelsea Braithwaite were best friends before she moved to England in their teens. Eight years later, she comes back to Elmtown, New York for graduate school and embodies everything Jamie wants in a woman.
Jamie performs weekly at a Jazz nightclub and is in his final year at Malcolm Vale University but he loves jazz to death and would do anything to have a career in music.
As he struggles to come to terms with the financial difficulties of he and his mother and an overpowering confusion about whether to follow his heart or his head in choosing a career path, he is unable to stop himself from falling in love with Chelsea. Although he becomes aware of the obstacles he faces, he knows deep in his heart, there can be only one girl for him.

*********************************************************************************
My Thoughts:

I have a lot of thoughts on this novel, but I'm not really sure how to put them out there. I don't often have these problems with reviews. Rather than start out with all the things that didn't work for me in the novel, let me start this time by talking about some of the pluses I had about this read.

Themes. Joy Galloway is a grade-A woman. How can I tell? With the emphasis for family and positive moral values she place sin her characters. What a feeling I got when I read how mature and oriented Jamie and Chelsea could be at times. Especially Jamie. Jamie was, by far, my favorite character of the novel. This is really saying something for me, as I oftentimes do not relate to the male characters in NA novels in any capacity. Jamie was honest, he was relatable, and he had a great head on his shoulders. I think my favorite part about him was, unlike the average 'New Adult Male' we are seeing these days, Jamie was not ashamed to show his emotions. Nor was he to prideful to ask for help. Jamie knew what he needed to do to succeed and he did what was necessary to support his family, all the while still finding a way to support his dreams. For that, I have massive respect.

Overall Plot. I will touch on some of the more negative aspects of the plot later on, but as a whole, I found the plot to be enjoyable. It was not unlike others I have read, but Galloway has such a way with words as to make it flow so well within the context of our story. Galloway sure 'brought the feels' in more than one part of our novel. She was quick to let the emotions flow, but definitely did it in a classy and realistic way. Galloway does not harp on the depression, and she takes great pride in the triumphs. Who couldn't get behind that?

A 'Happily Ever After'. Believe it or not, I haven't read a novel with a TRUE HEA in quite some time. Huge kudos to Galloway for supplying us with a novel where a full resolution is reached. While I have seen where Galloway is intending to develop this novel into a series, I believe it will be set as a series of standalones within the same world. Rightfully so, as I believe that Jamie and Chelsea's stories are complete!

As you can see from above, I did enjoy many facets of this novel. That is not to say, however, that it did not have its' faults. I had a number of critiques about this novel, but I have decided to cut it down to just a handful for this review. As any of you who read my reviews regularly know, I don't hold back when it comes to my reviewing. As someone who does this in real life, I have to give all authors my honest opinions if at all possible. Here are a few of my more glowing criticisms:

Editing. This novel had a number of editing issues. I usually don't critique on this, because honestly, if you can write a 300 page novel, I could care less if you misplace a few commas. Unfortunately, Autumn had many more problems than comma misplacement. My two biggest red flags for this novel editing-wise were pretty big ones. For one, the author uses a lot of "thinking" in her story, as in we read a lot of the characters thoughts. Rather than being written as italicized thoughts to set it apart from the text, it was written just as every other word. So every time I hit a line that said "Chelsea/Jamie thought", I had to go back and reread it as something important. This made reading the novel incredible frustrating at times. Another big issue for me was the dialogue at times. A lot of it was forced, un-necessary, or didn't make any sense. Sometimes the very best thing to say is to say absolutely nothing at all. Though, this comes from the POV from which the novel is told, which I will get to in a bit.

Relevance/Contemporary Aspect. This novel is set in 2010. That being said, it's definitely not the 2010 that I lived in. I don't know what, specifically, makes me say this, but there were so many times when I thought the books just felt like it was set in 1975 or something. I honestly don't know Everyone's mindset and the things that were being said just seemed so... out of place for me. Also, some of the money stuff wasn't adding up for me. For instance, $60k/year job sounds INCREDIBLE to me, but to someone that lived in a huge city, that's nothing. I guess I just didn't connect too well with that. Having come from a background that's very similar to that of Jamie and Helen, I just thought their situation could have been handled a bit differently.

Plotlines not adding up. Jamie and Helen are dirt poor, but they could afford to send Jamie to South Korea to teach English immediately after high school for a year prior to starting college? Also, I looked into those programs years ago and I know for a fact that they would never let someone go teach English straight out of high school as a second language. I have 2 degrees and I'm BARELY qualified to do it now. Also, Amy was a great character until suddenly, she wasn't. She seriously just... disappeared? This was a big issue for me, in the end, I am not sure I truly understood Amy's role in the novel.

Emotions. Our characters were well written, but were horrible at displaying emotion. I could honestly relate with these characters in a way I hadn't in a long time, but they way they acted just seemed like it came out of a Jane Austen novel. They were so reserved and quiet about things a normal character would have flipped out over. Your boyfriend cheats on you after 6 months with your best friend? And you just let it go and cry about it? BURN THAT GIRLS HOUSE DOWN. SLASH HIS TIRES. Seriously? Where was the anger? The hatred? Sure she falls for Jamie and it makes it easier, but cooommmmeee on.

Lack of Adult Situations. This was an 'NA' novel. That being said, it is, hands down, the safest NA novel I have ever read. There is little-to-no cursing. No sex, in any capacity. There was lots of hand holding and a whole lot of staring longingly at one another, but seriously, this had less romance than a Disney movie. I don't care for sex scenes, ever, but these college seniors are acting like Pre-Teens in a super conservative Christian school. College kids aren't that laid back and mature constantly. Where was the fun? I'm just used to seeing an entirely different side to romance in the book world, I suppose. Especially as a 23 year old college graduate, the exact same age/situation as our characters, I know this isn't how it would go down.

Third Person POV. I won't lie to you, this was the hardest part of this novel for me to wrap my head around. The funny thing about this novel is that it really does not have a huge cast of characters. Why is it, then, that I found myself reading about every random character's thoughts and actions? Galloway is an incredible author was an amazing talent, but I believe this novel would have worked much better if it had been written in a dual-POV told in first person via Jamie and Chelsea. It would have been a great way to see what was really happening inside their heads.

As you can see, I had a lot of thoughts on An Autumn to Remember. In fact, I have been sitting on this review for quite some time in order to wrap my mind around it all to better formulate and alter my thoughts. While this was not my favorite NA novel, I strongly believe that Galloway is an incredible author with great potential! I will definitely be checking out her future reads! In that breath, I am giving An Autumn to Remember a 3.5-star review. While I did enjoy the story immensely, some of the negative critiques I pointed out above really kept this one from falling into my 'new favorites' category. Any readers looking for a PG-13 New Adult Romance will definitely want to add this novel to your TBRs!
